What do shrimp do in the planted tank? Most people with planted tanks havew a lot of shrimp so i was wondering, are they beneficial? Do they add a lot of bioload?

Thanks
Will

Depends on what type of Shrimp.

Caridina japonica
Amano Shrimp
These guys will eat some types of algae, are fun to watch and place little impact on the bioload. Grow to around 5cm

Neocaridina sp. "Red Crystal"
Chrystal Shrimp
A little smaller than Amanos and can breed and hatch in freshwater.

Atyopsis gabonensis
Cameroon Shrimp
Grows to 15cm and is a filter feeder sifting particles from the water column.

Atyopsis moluccensis
Asian Fan Srimp
Grows to around 12cm. Like the above also a filter feeder.

cherry shrimp eat more kinds of algae than amano, they breed like rabbits and the eggs hatch in freshwater instead of brackish. Also smaller than amano, usually more expensive but alot nicer looking since they are red!

I'm after a few but can't get any until next year :( :(

Tropicalfish4U they sponsor the site and have fair prices and fast shipping. If you have large fish they will eat cherries you could go with amanos if that is the case.
