Just got myself 2 female bettas, put them in yesterday. They haven't exactly been active! That's fine by me, they can (and will) do whatever they please anyway, but I'm curious as to whether they're showing normal behaviour.

They seem to hide most of the time, or very slowly move around the bottom of the tank. Is that normal?

Hi, They are probably just acclimating themselves to their new enviornment.
Give them a few days and they'll explore more of their new world, I suspect.

My bettas behave that way at night when they were sleeping and the room lights come on. Otherwise, Homer spends a good chunk of his day flaring at something, whether it's a flower on one of the silk plants or his reflection  Then of course, he proceeds to make a bubblenest and continues his routine of flaring, resting, and the occasional loop through his little rock/cave thingy.

The other little runt, Duff, is a neurotic little fishy who like to swim up and down, side to side across the sides of the tank. Which at first I thought was a sign of some sort of illness, but he's in good health. It just seems to be one of his quirks  Another one of his quirks is spitting out food then chasing it down. The only problem with that is he rarely catches all the food he spits out and decides he doesn't want it anymore and comes back up towards the surface for some "fresher" food. :sly:

It took a while before they began to show their true personalities. For the first week or so they were somewhat shy and reserved. Just give your bettas time ;)

It's normal for them at first to be shy and timid, but once they settle in they should be swimming up, down, left, right all over :D

By the way, where did you get the female bettas from ?, I can never get hold of them here, so if you can tell me where the shop you got it from, it'll be great!

I know this forum is full of Wal-Mart haters, but at my Wal-Mart they care for their fish very well, all of the bettas have DOUBLE the size cups of PetSmart/Petco and local shops. And also, my Wal-Marts both carry female bettas. And there are quite a few very pretty, colorful bettas. I saw a pink and purple one the other day!

And yep, my bettas were the same. Shy and timid for about a week, but now Hades spends all day flaring at Zeus, and Zeus swims around all day, pecking at gravel and plants, occasionally flaring back at Hades.

Wal-mart may have double the size cups (for the males only) but from what I have seen they don't even bother filling the cups up with much water.

The only place I've seen female bettas is at Wal-mart. Well, there's the occasional female at Petsmart but that's somewhat rare.
