I have had marine tank for 2 years now and am ready to take the leap to get coral. what sort of coral do you all recomend to start with?
i would like a mixture of colours in there.

Most softies are relativly hardy, although some are not! But there are of course my favourties the euphyllias

What is your lighting like?

i did post recently about my dead clow, of which the female killed the new one too so im sticking to just her for now.
um, my lighting is the standard that came with the jewl rio 240
do i need to upgrade them?

you need to upgrade your lighting if you whant to keep differnt coral other than softies

two years! well your alot more sensible than me I waited two weeks now on my fourth month of having them i have lps and sps. btw lighting restricts you alot i find. If you want a mixture in the future I would look into halides.

Also you state you have no Live Rock IMO that is a big no no for corals

T5 or T8?

do i need to upgrade them?

If they are t5 you can keep many softies and euphyllias along with any low lighting loving corals like suns. If they are T8 you could try some mushies

it is T5 lighting system.

though once again i am hindered.
on top of the two clowns being bullied and killed i have now had two fire shrimp die. 1st was 2 weeks ago (not sure if this was my fault) I was ill with flu and did a water change but not sure if the water had heated enough before i put it in)
it had shed its skin the day before and all of a sudden it swam to the top and flipped on its back and fell to the bottom.

2 days ago my other shrimp shed its skin and today it too died on the bottom on its back as well.
when i pulled it out with the net its tail looked broken.
i had done nothing with the tank prior to this one dying so dont think it was me who caused it.

in answer to the other question, i do still have some live rock, but have thrown most of it as it because it was so crap and crumbling.
will be getting more when i can.

my nitrate spike has gone at last, but now i have a nitrate spike so am dealing with this with water change tomorrow (after water warmed with spare heater)

im only looking for ideas on corals untill i know everything else i have left is still healthy.

Nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle as I am sure you know. So other stuff has been leading to the nitrate spike. Perhaps the nitrifying bacteria has kicked in, or the ammonia processing bacteria, or perhaps too much was placed in the tank or too much feeding?

Ultimately your answer comes from testing the water. The LR, crumbled or not, may have been producing more filtration than you thought. Removing it may destabilize the tank. and cause a mini-cycle.

I would say do some tests, post again and do the necessary adjustment and see how it works out.

In all honesty, from the bits of dirt and leaves that was coming out of this rock im sure it was the rock itself that caused the problem in the first plce.

how about these? and which are best?

dwarf feather duster plant
blue Palythoa
Pulsing Striped Xenia
Red Carnation & Pink Carnation
Umbrella Sarcophyton
Fuzzy Star Sinularia
Flourescent Green Leather
White Leather

how much can i have? i never realised there were so many different types.

You can have as many as you like the one thing to bare in mind is leathers use chemical warfare to ensure they have space to grow so Carbon should be run in the tank.

There are other corals you can have which will give you a nice mix Rics will give a nice mix of colours on your rocks and are quite easy to keep Zoas are commonly availble and have a multitude of colours and are very easy to keep

If you want something that looks good but needs a little spot feeding Sun Corals are a good addtion also Chili corals for a nice red splash (these also need feeding)

As far as corals go you can add as many as you can fit in you just need to make sure they will not sting each other :)

ooh, thats nice to know, another silly question i guess, but you noted that sun corals and chili corals ( which i saw this morning while searching the net) need spot feeding, what is the general feeding for corals? im guessing its nothing like fish lol.
