I have been keeping far to many different types over the last Ten Years when i first got into this hobby myself (I was brought up with Oscars and Severums in the house, but was not responsible for keeping them).

I have gone through so many different types, but still some elude me that i would love to have a go at one day.

here is my list of 'To Keep one day'

Central Americans

True Amphilophus Labiatus or Citrinellus (Red Devil or Midas)
Parachromis Dovii (Wolf Cichlid)
Parachromis Motaguenese (Red Tiger Mota/RTM's)

South Americans
True Heros Severus variants (Mouth-brooding Severum)
True Heros Sp. Notatus (Spotted Severum)
"Cichlasoma" Festae (Red Terror)
Hoplarchus Psittacus (True Parrot Cichlid)

African

Tilapia Buttikoferi (Hornet Cichlid/Butti)

Not sure, have already got or will be getting soon enough, all the cichlids I really want. Like JD's and Texas though.

My next venture will be marine, but at the moment I'm happy with what I have and 3 tanks is enough at the moment. Will be getting a marine tank when got a) space b) money :good:

Ah Jack Dempseys, beautiful fish, the black ones are stunning.

I forgot to mention Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, I will definitely give one of those a go once they drop in price a bit :)

The EBJDs are beautiful, but I have heard they can be quite weak like the Dalmation of the fish world. They are also bloomin' expensive

Ha yes, I have heard/read that to, My local Maidenhead Aquatics had them on sale for £65 (recently dropped to £55) and I was never tempted at that price, then i went to another LFS recently in a near by town and they were a nice size for £28!!!! I so wanted one but Sadly the fish i currently have are not so forgiving to new comers!

I have kept quite a few in my time including hybrids (what can I say I just like things that shouldnt be). I have kept EBJD and have to say yes they are beautiful but they are oh so weak and inbred. I gave mine perfect water conditions and good food and one developed eye problems from a young age and the other got to a decent size and apart from a very slight eye issue seemed to be the picture of health. One day I noticed he was a bit sluggish and the next day he was dead. Not a mark on him and no real sign of illness. The other soldiered on even though he was totally blind and kind of mishapen then one day he managed to jump out to his death. I kept a red texas cichlid though and that was completely different and one tough cookie, beautiful fish but mean has hell. Super red severums are also another stunning looking fish that I have kept even though I dont really like sevs normally.

For cichlids I would like to keep I would probably say some of the rarer cryptoheros or archocentrus centrarchus and some of the bigger parachromis or caquetaia umbriferus. I think my ultimate cichlid would be a big chunky male snow white midas cichlid :)

Discus, Discus oh and more Discus? Haha just kidding. Personally I feel Ive been lucky enough to have kept every fish Ive wanted in freshwater. I really don't have any freshwater species that have the "wow" shock effect anymore to urge me to buy them. I'm contemplating my next venture to be on the Salty side I've always been a fan of Clown fish, I've been looking on and off at trying my luck with a 10G nano tank.

Welcome to the nut house :) you have come to the right place to talk about sa cichlids.

Want a GT ! Never had one. Don't think the inhabitants of either of my tanks would appreciate it though.
There is a lovely 9-10" long female at one of my LFS, who I am constantly tempted by.

Don't do it!!

Seriously they are beautiful, but really belong with likeminded thugs like Convicts etc, so that would mean changing your entire stocking

Altum Angels
True Parrot Cichlid
Heros sp. Rotkeil

Festae Red Terror
vieja argentea
Pearsei

Suprised no one has mentioned a Chocolate cichlid!

I had that on my to keep list and got one not too long ago (5-6 months) and wow they are just amazing to watch. They are definately friendly giants, the colour changes depending on mood are just stunning to watch and well just if you have the room get one in and you will see..
