I have 70 litre tank and am looking to turn it into a catfish/plec haven!!!

I added my first couple of Corys last week and I will be adding some more over the next couple of days. I am also definately getting a Bristle nose as I think that theya re fantastic little creatures!!

I was just wondering what other catfish/ plecs people think I should get? I currently have the 2 corys along with all other fish in my signiature. I think I will eventually be moving the danios and the platys to another tank so ignore the room that they are taking up at the minute.

Sorry to ruin it for you, but a 70 litre can't be a big pleco haven. Most plecos grow over 4inches and create alot waste so you would need very good filtration and would need to clean the tank quite regularly with one inside. I would stick with your cory idea and if you want suckermouthed fish, try ottos. ;)

Thanks for bringing me down to Earth with a bump snowy

I think I ws going a bit over board with plec idea :*)
I am really only looking at the Bristlenose as ebing the only plec in there to be honest and the rest to be various types of corys, other catfish,(not sure what yet) and a couple of suckermouths.

I did look at Otos but I know a lot of people have those and I wanted something a bit different so I went for the Borneo Suckers, bit more expensive but cool little fish. Believe they are also known as Hillcrest Loach.

Thanks for your concern over the plecs though snowy :p

It's people like you that make this forum, looking after us newbies and making sure we are doing the right thing!!

I wouldnt reccomend even a bristlenose in a 70L. If you have your heart set on a plec, then look into clown plecs, and other types of peckoltia which dont grow above 3.5".

Hillstream loaches would do fine in a 70L but remember to acclimatise them properly as they are from the more temperate parts of tropical habbitat. They also like fast running water.

Seeing as you only bought 2 corys I would get another 3 of them and then maybe 1 small plec. 70L isnt that big, the more you try to cram into it, the less happy your fish will be.

hillstream, that's what I meant!!!

Anyway, don't worry everybody, I know 70 litre not that big and I ain't gunna cram a lot in there because that not fair on the fish.

I'm just going to have to keep jabbing the girlfriend to let me have a bigger tank then!!!

:sniff: Thats What I said a few months ago and I will agree with you it SOUNDS like a good idea. The problem is your viewing. Catfish usually will NEVER come out unless it is very very dark. I never saw any of my fish, it down right Stunk.

Though if you insist here is the list I had in my Catfish Haven.
~Common Pleco
~Chocolate Pleco
~Upside Down Catfish
~Green-Gold Cory
~2 Skunk Corys
~Pictus Catfish
~Synoduntist Catfish
~Sun Catfish
~Rapheal catfish

If you love catfish as much as I there are alternatives. Glass Catfish are wonderfull fish who are mid dwellers but look like see through catfish.

I see your point about the cats

You seem to be a real catfish lover like myself Hotstuffgal!!

Your catfish tank does sound very cool with all those different cats in, I do prefer Corys to most cats though and from what I have seen at the minute the 2 corys I have seem to be doing great and are always scurrying about the place!

I have located somewhere close to me that sells the clown plec and the bulldog plec so I am considering those because I know they don't get that big.

I will have a look at the glass catfish you suggested and hope that I can find somewhere that sells them.

I am fortunate that I am not too far way from a place called Wharf Aquatics that is a n amazing retailor and mopst UK hobbyists will have heard of it I think. They usually stock some great fish and always give really good advice.

I am going there in a couple of weeks so will probably add to my corys and cats then!!

Keep the info on the cats coming people, I want to learn as much as possible!!

I Guess I am! lol Yes Glass Catfish are a great addition for a tank. I Have 1 in my current 20 gallon tank but they are quite beautifull when in a group, but I have to warn you they are totally colorless!

Your lucky to have such a good lfs. We don't up here on the east coast of the USA. We have large pet chains but they have horribal fish. We have a few specialty fish shops with very high quality fish but not much of a selection, but goodluck!

hey hotstuff, you could do with getting a few more Glass Cats, they can actually die prematurely if kept alone ;)

most places suggest at least 4. (PlanetCatfish.com)
Really? I had no idea, well thank you i guess I will have to run down and pick up a few more :fish:
