What Can I Get In A 5 Gallon?

ok thanks

and also look on the Rosy Red Minnow forum on this site, it says rosy reds can be kept in a 5 gallon tank. i also like the thought of a white betta, a pure white though, not the one that kinda looks pink
here is a video of the type i want:

do they sell these fish a petco or ur lfs? or are these really rare?

it was from the live chat, the guy Paul, who is the host of the chat room, and this other guy called space. plus i see a lot of people on youtube posting their 5 gallons with a betta and some neon tetras. the people commenting said that it was kinda pushing it but if the person kept up with the necessary water changes then it will be fine. of course, who knows how long the tetras lived.

maybe a rosy red minnow, a betta, and some shrimp?

or a rosy red minnow and some harlequin rasboras?

the only reason i am now considering a betta is because my LFC sells white bettas, and those look very cool.

btw, what does IMO mean?
Water quality is not the issue here, it would be very easy to keep the water quality up.
The issue is space, 5 or 6 active 2" long fish will not behave naturally in that size of tank. You can do it, and probably wont have problems with physical health or water quality - but this is not the responsible way to look after any animal. I you care about animal welfare at all, you really have to face up to the fact that your tank is too small for most fish.
If you don't really care about the fish, your at the wrong site

If you look at youtube, there's people keeping arapamia (which can reach 3m) in 100gal tanks and feeding them only on goldfish (very bad for health), and much much worse vids if you look for them - youtube isn't very reliable. Some rubbish pet stores may say your fine as well - but they are merely trying to make a sale.
Live chat doesn't always have experienced people on it. If you look, all the experienced members on this thread have said no...only people new to this (no offence intended) have said you could have them.

Rosy red minnows can and will get around 3" if kept right, and like to be in groups - certainly not suitable for a 5gallon tank unless temporary. I think 'The Dudes' advice is very inaccurate here, but he does say bigger is better.

You can buy bettas like that off the internet really easily, but you will be paying extra (mainly for shipping) :). Check out aquabid.com.

Harlequins are an even worse option that the tetras - they are more active and will suffer even more form the lack of space.

Methinks you should just buy a bigger tank.

i'll try to when i get the funds, but since my parents aren't too fond of me spending tons of money on fish related things, as of now its a no go

and i've been hearing many mixed comments about the sizes of neon tetras, some say 1 inch to 1.5 inches is max, while others say 2 inches or even 2.5 inches. maybe i'll just do a betta and some shrimp then...=(

Dont be dishartend I bought a 3 gallon tank and found i couldnt place much in it, so went for a betta and to be honest i'm so glad i was forced into it as such, it's such a cool fish, my whole family's taken to him.

so based on what i saw in that 5.5 gallon planted tank you showed me on that thread, could i also put in some galaxy rasboras?

There are fish that are smaller/need less swimming space than neon tetras; it's more a question of whether you can get hold of them.

There is a tiny livebearer called heterandria formosa that would be fine, but hard to find in the shops.

A single sparkling gourami plus some shrimps should be ok.

If your water is soft, then there are the microrasboras.

There are also tiny rainbow fish (the pseudomugils) but these can be quite fussy about water quality, so are best kept in a bigger tank.

A cherry shrimp tank will offer endless entertainment.

And there is always the betta option to fall back on.

since my only source for aquatic life is my LFS (petco) i don't think i can get any of the options you suggested. however, i do want to try out the galaxy rasboras. maybe just a few of them could a work out.

OR

i'll go with a betta and two african dwarf frogs?

a betta and 3 otos would go in a 5 gal tank with little to no problems.

Just let the tank mature enough before getting otos as they need algae to survive.

i must have said this to 100 different people already check if you have a freecycle group (yahoo groups) in your area people are always giving away tanks!
keep the tank you have as a hospital tank or a fry tank or whatever, just wait till you can get a tank that you can stock how you want to not because it's all that will fit. the money you will be spending on food, equipment, medication, and the fish you want to put in your 5 gal can go to better use like towards a bigger tank!

why would serpaes be worse choices than neon tetras?
