Can Convicts Breed with Jack Dempsey's?

Yep, both CA cichlids and part of the same family (Archocentrus / Cichlasoma)...search in google and you'll find examples like this one:

Yep, I guess we should be thinking more about what happens in the long run to the pure breeds...an example of this is Convicts being breed with Honduran Red Points...I have a HRP, that's what it was labelled up as in the LFS anyway, but I doubt it is a pure breed and should probably take on the name "Blue Convict" instead...

If keep separate and not culled then I see no issue though, it's just when it muddies the water for everyone that it's an issue.

The whole convict/hrp thing is quite a fierce debate at times. High quality convicts can be identical to HRPs just to complicate things further.....

But just to add blue convicts are usually, con x HRP and can often turn out to be absolutely mental!

And to add further that can be an other issue with hybrids, because esentially they are an experiment and you can sometimes not judge size and aggression levels. With quite a few problems of some people getting complete ginormous freaks at times.

Any CA cichlid will breed with any CA cichlid, SAs are more picky though. Any of the old cryptoheros family can cross breed and it happens all to often. The problem is not if you breed them but then what happens after you have moved them on but if your just making turtle food..... I have to ask ...... whats the point?? I mean you may as well just get proper easy to breed fish to farm for food, if your never going to get them to grow up?

Well I actually got all the Convicts for free so why go out and spend money on other fish when I have a pretty good supply of convicts lol..plus I dont like most of the feeder fish at the local pet store..there really "un healthy" if you ask me...

That might explain the current aggression issues in my tank, my Firemouth is afraid all the time and hides inside a moneywort plant right now...my HRP/Blue Convict is a bit of a bossy pants these days, he has absolutely no fear.

But I will have to wait until next weekend before I make the transition, I'm away this weekend and most of next week for work

I figure once the tank tank is setup and all fish are in there I shall get 1 or maybe 2 sevs in there, I am hoping they'll be the peacemakers and make little old HRP feel somewhat small and insignificant so he backs down some...

edit: Blue Convict / Yellow Convict might be cool...and wouldn't upset too many people. You may end up with a smaller multi-coloured convict of sorts...mixing any of the Archocentrus family might not be such a bad thing: www.aquahobby.com/zeco/genero.php?gen=Archocentrus
