Hi Chaps,

This is my plec. I was sold him as a "Royal Plec" that won't grow more than a few inches (i.e. 3-4" long).

Is this correct? If not what is he and how big will he grow? He is in my Aquaone 620T tank.

Cheers,

CG

any more info?? Sure that size??? Seems very slow growing at the mo.

They're very slow growing but will reach 12-16" eventually. You're looking at a very long time before that happens though as I was advised by some owners that they grow on average 1"-3" per year.

They eat bogwood, so they need plenty. They also make a hell of a lot of mess compared to other ples species, so be prepared for at least twice weekly gravel vacs. Because of the waste issue, they need good filtration too.

Panaques are strictly vegetarian, there is evidence to suggest that protein in their diet shortens their lives, so that can be an issue when housing with other species.

What size tank is he in currently (sorry, don't recognise the make)? Because of the water uality side of things, they need bigger tanks than you think for their size.

Hope that helps - he's lovely!

the 620T is probubly only 2ft wide, but its quite deep.

It wont be suitable long term :(

definatly a royal "plec"

but its not acctually a plecostomus, its a panaque, which means it wont grow to 2' plus.
i get the number L190 though. the eyes dont look that dull to me :p . looks like these numbers are just as confusing as the names! lol :fun: x

Anyone say Panaques can't reach 2ft ? ;) Some can indeed

CFC could. :p A few other members have aquariums large enough to house several of these infact. IIRC, smithrc has a large aquarium project going on that could hold them. He's like the Inchworm of plecs.

Thanks for the info guys. Hopefully I'll be able to get a bigger tank by the time he needs one!

That's a Volkswagen Panaque (are they also called Titanic? can't remember). Different species to the Royal (same family though). :)

pink dolphin, it's definitely an L191, L190s have red (or reddish) eyes and brighter markings. L191s are more olive in colouring and don't have the red eyes, hence the name.
