I've had my betta for a couple weeks now and he's been eating flake food and occasionally freeze-dried brine shrimp - both of which he completely gobbles up. I'm interested in giving him healthier foods, perhaps live, but I'm worried about introducing parasites or disease.  I was thinking about ordering some online. What do you guys suggest?

I'd recomend some nice blood worms both live and freeze-dried and maybe cut up veggies!

I wouldn't feed flakes or freeze-dried to him. They can cause bloat, and the flakes make it hard to tell how much exactly is being eaten.
Pellets are good for a staple food. I just feed mine 3 TetraBetta pellets a day, except for Sunday. For treats, usually on Saturday, I give him a frozen bloodworm or two.
Sorry I don't know of other frozen foods to recommend, perhaps black worms?

One of my betta gets OmegaOne betta pellets, two or three a day, with the occasional treat of frozen bloodworms. I don't do freeze dried as that can cause some digestive issues. My other betta is really picky about the size of his food so he gets new life spectrum small fish formula pellets

Bettas are carnivores and do not need veggies and their diet should consist of a protein rich diet.

OP -  It is best to use a good pellet for the majority of the betta's diet.  You can use a variety of frozen foods for treats - bloodworms, brineshrimp, glassworms, beefheart, daphnia, ect.  If you want to feed some live foods, I recommend grindal worms.

Try to steer clear of freeze dried since they are a big known cause of bloating in bettas.

+1
Check out my profile for the foods I tend to use, they love glass worms.
Plus, it is a good idea to rest your Betta by not feeding for 24 hours+ at least once a week or more, as they are easily lost through bloat.

Thanks so much! That was really helpful!
Has anyone ever had issues with parasites/disease from using live foods? I've read so many horror stories...

I am too used to Gourami, same kind of fish sorry!

My betta gets pellets 99% of the time.
If you want to use the freeze dried blood worms, soak them first. So they absorb the water and aren't "airy". That should lower the bloat risk.
You could always breed your own live food. (Works better in the summer.... lol.)

I give mine the following:

New Life Spectrum Tropical fish food,
Fluval Tropical Flakes,
Tetramin Flakes,
Frozen Bloodworms,
Frozen Daphnia
Frozen Brine Shrimp

In no particular order, some days I wont feed at all, some other days I'll do.
All my tanks have the same diet, with a few tweaks to accomodate cories/shrimp/snails.

I feed cultured live bugs like fruit flies, mosquito larvae, pantry moths (indianmeal) and Hofmannophila moths. Mr.fishy, my red betta splendens is gonna be 3 years old this coming March :)

This is exactly what I was going to say. Only thing I would add to the list of live is if you can culture them, daphnia magna and wingless fruit flies. Bettas love both of those.
