What Became Of The 'free Fish'

Just another small update, i will posat pictures of Cosmo and Wanda (named by my mother... ) when my camera is charged. They are a bit bigger than when I bought them, and almost solid gold now. I am already planning a christmas tank for them, once I can find a place to put it :X They are a lot more comfortable around me now, and ill even eat in my presence. I have even conducted 2 water changes on their tank now. Thanks to everyone for their advice and kind words, it has really helped make a difference in two rather fascinating creatures. I will be sure to get pictures of the new tank up as soon as I buy it. Any suggestions? (gallon size, filter size, decorations, etc)

Common goldfish need more room than fancies as a rule because they are more active and get a bit bigger (generally). A good tank size for the two of them would be 30"x18"x12" (LxHxW) which is around 29 US Gallons, with a filter that will filter the tank 10 times in an hour (I have a tank that size for three fancy goldfish and use a Fluval 4+ filter with a spray bar).
Decoration is down to your own personal tastes! I look forward to more pictures of them and their new Christmas tank! ^_^

Thanks! I have a stand for a 30 gallon tank, so my guess is that will be their new home. Can they live in that permanently, or will they eventually grow out of it?

I would personally say that two common goldfish could live in a 30 gallon for the entirity of their lives. So long as you don't put any other fish in there it should be just fine (hehe... you could maybe get away with putting an apple snail in there provided the temperature isn't lower than 23C, but not more fish).

Another update. Cosmo and Wanda are completely golden now, with clear fins. All traces of black are gone. I rummaged up enough money to buy them a brand new 29 gallon tank, stand, hood, and filter. I kinda ran out of the money I need for the gravel and decorations, but I should definitely be able to come up with that in a couple days, due to the holidays. My mom was FURIOUS that I had decided to buy another tank, and since I had put it on reserve via the phone at my lfs earlier that day, I had nothing to worry about if she slowed me down a day or so. I asked if I could 'drop by' the pet store, and, I will admit, I am mischevous. I had in my pocket 100 bucks I saved from my birthday, back in october. (I knew I would need it for SOMETHING.) And so, I went in, quick paid for everything I had put on hold, and before my mom had time to protest, it was loaded in the car. Oh boy, did I get it on the way home. Did it matter much? No. I tell you, being a long time animal devoted vegitarian, I will do anything to help needy animals. The discussion went kinda like this,

My mom: I just can't believe you. If you were going to do this, couldn't you have at least gotten pretty fish, like you did last time? (She was referring to my two fancy goldfish I had earlier this summer, who both passed away from ich, and secondary infections.)

Me: Uhh, well mom, even if Cosmo and Wanda aren't pretty, they're still animals that I am responsible for.

My mom: I hardly call fish animals.

Me: If you cut them, they bleed.

My mom: ... well, what they're in now looks fine to me.

Me: You're not a fish, are you? Plus, when they keep growing, a 5 gallon tank isn't going to be nearly enough.

My mom: Why did you get them in the first place?

Me: They needed a home.

My mom: All I know is, they're a waste of money. They don't even DO anything.

Me: I happen to enjoy them. That's doing something, isn't it? Plus, you just spent 100 bucks on gifts for people we hardly know, who have a lot of money anyways. Couldn't that money have been used to a better benefit?

My mom: That has nothing to do with this.

Sometimes, you just can't win them all. I hope I don't lose compassion when I get older. All that matters now, is that I have the basics for a decent setup for my fish.

True. I am consdering putting up a fish tank in her room, for some bonding action, perhaps?

Yea thats a good idea, maybe a little tropical community, with lots of pretty little fish so she doesnt get bored too quick.. also try short lived fish so theres a reasonable turnover in there, that should keep her interest :)

Well, the monstrosity that is Cosmo and Wanda's new home was furnished and filled today. I am going to let the filter run for about a week, then put cycled media in the filter, and some cycled gravel to help jump start my cycle. I was also wrong on the tank size, this tank is 30 gallons extra high (i don't have the money for a new stand, so I had to get a tank that would fit the stand i had, and lucky for me, I found a tank big enough to hold Cosmo and Wanda, and fit the stand.) It looks breathrakingly good, especially for me having such a low budget. (I am too young to work, too young to drive, oh what fun.) I bought a plastic tree stump with large holes, so that I won't need to replace it when the fish grow, and three large, tall plastic plants to fill in some of the space. It is an enormously high tank, I was up to my armpits in water when a plant came loose and it was mostly filled. I will make sure to take some pictures, for sure.

Sounds good to me ^_^. I'm sure Wanda and Cosmo will be very happy once they've become used to the extra space!
