I saw some danios in the shop yesterday that neither I nor the shop assistant (who keeps danios himself) could identify.

Basically, they had the body shape, size and general behaviour of giant danios, but instead of that golden broken-stripe pattern along their sides they had two rows of circles, one on top of the other, in a gentle grey along the side. They had a dark spot just behind the head.

Are these just a colour morph of the giant danio? How common are they? I thought they looked most attractive and was sorry I could not house them.

The dark spot behind the gills is a sure indicator of D.danglia

That's them! The colours were nowhere near as good on the ones in the shop, but that's definitely them. Thanks, Wolf; I knew you'd pin them down for me. I do wish I could buy them and give them a good home, but I can't provide the sort of space they'd need just yet.

Hiya,

I've just got home from the fish shop about 10 minutes ago, having brought some rock shrimps, and 4 of these danios - the shop couldnt really tell me much about them, but they looked similar to giant/peal danios.

The ones I've just picked up are similar colour to that of a silver sailfin molly.

I brought four of them for £10 - how much did the shop want for them where you spotted them?

Glad to spot this topic, as I wasn't 100% sure what they were!

Afraid I couldn't tell. They were in a tank labelled pearl danios (which they clearly were not), together with a group of giant danios (which the shop assistant thought they were). And I can't recall seeing any prices. Perhaps I could have bought them as pearl danios... :hey:

Credit where it is due, Duffman got there a full 27mins before me

4 for a tenner is a little above average
I pay around £1.95 each for mine but have seen them for a fiver each

They are very fast growing Caroline, so expect to have half adult size(3") in around 1month
