Hey everyone,

Im new here I made an account because Im dying to hear other ppls opinion on this.

My new landlord wants me to get rid of my 55 gallon fish tank because hes worries it will break. Im on the main level of a duplex and he lives upstairs. the basement is more of a crawl space from what i understand. Apparently where I have the tank is right above his new furnace and he says if it breaks itwill be ruined. There is nowhere else for it to go because I moved from a 2 to a 1 and all the othere rooms r crammed as is.

I just want to your some opinions or suggestions about this situation. Do you think the landlord is being too paranoidé

a full 55 weighs almost 500 lbs, so i understand his concern. But i honestly can't see a problem with it. Does he pay the electric bill? maybe he's using that as a cover because he doesn't want to pay for it, idk, just an idea

No I pay the bill and he seems more concerned about water damage, like thye tank breaking, i know it is heavy but ive had it for so long and nothing has ever happened

Unfortunately you're kind of in the hands of your landlord if you're renting, and if he has concerns then he's within his rights to ask you to cooperate, the same way you'd sharp complain if the furnace broke and the heating went off. I'd suggest that the best way to go forward is to make sure there is insurance (probably as part of the buildings cover) to cover the event of tank breakage and that it covers the costs required to repair or replace the furnace. You may want to negotiate the costs involved in that, but you're still in the hands of your landlord.

You never know what could happen. I would offer to pay a pet deposits for the tank in case damage was done by it. Sorry that's a bummer. No way you could move?

i agree with Mhunt - the landlord is the over god in that respect and can pretty much request almost anything, as everyone else are mere mortals.

that said, maybe you could take out insurance on the tank in case of such emergencies and provide assurance to the landlord for this?

i have a very large tank, and i have insurance for it, albeit for my sake, not of any landlords

I might try insurance. If that doesnt ease his worries Ill just do as he says and pout about it lol. The matter is on hold right now as we had a major leak from the roof into the walls, I currently have no ceiling in my kitchin....what a day...

Methinks the landlord has bigger worries than your tank breaking at the minute!

Lol I know right, I brought it up and hes like I cant even think about that right now...this morning I have to move the tank because they have to take down the drywall behind the tank. Another one of lifes little hurdles....sigh...
