What Are Some Fairly Easy Species To Breed?

I have an empty 30 gallon tank that is up and running and would like to breed something in it. I also have a 20 gallon I could set up if I need to for fry. I dont want to livebearers.

I have breed convicts, guppies, and gouramis in the past (but I did have some problems with the gourami fry). I am not sure which fish I wanna try and breed, but I was hoping to try something different and not as common as say livebearers.

Does anyone have any suggestions on some species that arent real difficult to breed? I have been googling and reading as much info as I can get, but still havent come to a conclusion yet.

Thank you for your time and help! Have a good one :shifty:

Kribensis could work in a 30G, As could many of the convicts slightly rarer cousins including Sajica or Honduran red points

or alternatively you could try breeding something like Bristlenose plecs

Have you tried anything like corys?

No I havent tried corys.

Corydoras :good:

Ah that is something to consider.

Kribensis look pretty colorful, I like that. Are they pretty easy to breed? I did some googling of honduran red points - some of them look very similar to convicts, and some others had some red and blue colors. How common are the Honduran red points? If they are somewhat rare, it might be easy to trade the fry in.

I am fairly new to breeding, but I years ago I had a cichlid tank and I like their personality.

Thanks you very much for the replies, I am taking all the responses into consideration and researching each recommendation.

Kribs are slightly harder than cons but still one of the more easier cichlids to breed, the hardest thing with these is probably picking out a compatible pair from the start,
unlike cons which will pretty much pair up with whatever mate they are 'paired' with, Kribs are more fussy over their partner and may require adding a group and then seperating the singles once a pair forms

Both sajica and Honduran Red Points aren't really common in the trade so should be relatively easy to rehome

I think your biggest question needs to be, if you end up with loads of babies, what are you going to do with them?

There is no point breeding something that you like just for the sake of it, when no one else will want the babies. Things like convicts and HRPs can be really hard to shift, so can a lot of cichlids...

You need to think about who is going to end up taking the babies off you, have you got enough tanks to seperate them and grow them to a sensible size, do you have someone who definately wants them....

Make a list of ideas and ask your LFS if they are willing to take them... and realise they wont want to give you money,,,if anything for them....

Yes, very important point there, MBOU!

My mum breed some kribs a few years ago and couldn't get rid of them for love nor money and ended up with three or four tanks of stunted kribs for the next few years

Some kind of apistogramma?

Depends on your tank ph as well really, some fish might be not so inclined to breed if it isn't quite 'right' for them.

Lionhead/Blockhead Cichlids (Steatocranus spp.), Golden Wonder Killifish both bred for me last year without any intervention from me, until the former turned into psycho parents and all tankmates had to be moved out!

I agree with MBOU. Make sure your fry have a place to go!

Have you thought about cherry barbs? They spawn loads and if you know how to handle eggs I think it shouldn't be a problem.

It takes a fair few months of raising them before they're of a size which an LFS will be interested in. And you will also need a decent sized grow out tank, very regular water changes and decent food.

I have recently bred HRP's non stop and have posted the fry (2 month old ish) to several members on here. Also just sold the parents as i had no more room for any fry to go. My Bronze Corydoras have also laid a load of eggs which should be hatching today, but again, these are common as muck so to speak so will fetch very little. I'm not in it to make money though, so i guess it depends on what angle you look at it from. I would rather other people get nice fish for less money.

Sajica's will go for more money than HRP's without doubt. I sold mine to members on here for 50p each, an LFS may offer you £1-£1.50 each for a decent 2" specimen. Sajica's probably 50-100% more so.

Some of the rarer Pelvicachromis species such as Taeniatus, Transvestitus etc will offer a greater premium so could also be viable to do if wanting to turn a better profit.

TBH Sajicas arent worth that much, they are seriously hard to shift! Its hardly worth most shops getting them in becuase they sit in the shop for donkys years, or at least until they mature and kill each other :p

Kribs seem to be harder to come by and most shops will probably bite your arm off for good quality Apisto Cacatoides/Aggasizzi babies because theirprices are going up...

But you will have to invest in a good quality breeding pair...

I went to a local shop near me at lunch and had a look at some double orange cacatoides, they are pretty nice but were very young. I'd like some Tripple Reds but cant source any at the moment :<

Funny that MBOU, guess it depends on where you are and what kind of fish your LFS import in. Mine has stacks and stacks of Apisto's, even the triple reds Tizer :p (us funny talkers and C.A.'s have our uses!!) They have started to stock probably 6-7 rarer varieties, and are very good quality. They also have Kribs for about £4 each so hardly hard to come by. On the other hand, Sajica's are £18 a pair. HRP's are about £12 a pair. Convicts are a couple of quid each.

My advice would be to speak to your LFS and ask them what they would like you to try breeding. At least that way you will know that you won't get stuck with them. :)

Some of the rarer Thorichthys would be a good option if the tank was a tad bigger. :)
