What are double tap valves on my Eheim....

What are the "double tap valves" that came with my eheim 2213?
What purpose do they serve?
It came with 2.

I've never owned a cannister filter in my life, and I can't find any info about these in the instructions or on their website.

they go in-line on the input and output hoses.
this allows you to turn the taps and disconect the cannister, but keeping the syphon in tact. once you have cleaned the cannister rejoin the vales, open them and turn on the filter, hey presto, all is running again.
