What Are Box Filters?

Hi GeordieFishLover :)

Box filters are an old fashioned way of filtering the water and providing adequate places for the beneficial bacteria to live. They are run by simple air pumps and filled with filter floss as the media. There are two in the tank below.

I have gone back to running all my tanks with these filters again. They do the job efficiently and are inexpensive to buy and maintain. Filter floss looks like cotton candy and is long lasting with only an occasional rinse in tank water to clean it. :D

This is what the whole set up looks like new. It includes the filter, air pump, airline tubing, and lots and lots of filter floss for the media. :D

They are more old school than out of date. Appearance wise many people don't want this plastic box in their tank, opting for a hob with one black tube & a box behind the tank, or a canister with two lines running to the tank.

I have many box filter running on many tanks. If you get a large pump & run enough air through them they filter as well as a hob or canister.
