This weekend, while shopping at PetsMart, I came across a container which looked like a quart-sized, waxed milk carton containing "Ammo Chips." They were pebbles about the size of coarse aquarium gravel which are supposed to be used to remove amonia from aquarium water.

But, I couldn't determine from the "instructions" on the carton whether they are to be used

a) in conjunction with or in place of aquarium gravel; or

B) in conjunction with or in place of granulated charcoal in a cannister filter.

Is anyone familiar with this product, and does it really remove ammonia?

TIA

"Ammo Chips" are indeed used in the filter.

They can be used one of two ways............

1. By themselves in place of carbon (never use charcoal as it is a waste of money)

2. in combination with carbon. You can mix equal parts of the two.

I have my doubts as to whether or not this is really an effective product tho.

The best way to remove ammonia is thru regular partial water changes.
