When they shed the whole shell comes off in one piece complete with the feelers! It will look like a transparent dead shrimp!

dead shrimp will be pink and skin will be white so thats how to tell

I'd bet on contaminants in the tap water. Copper doesn't just get into water from pipes, depending on where you live. If I were you I'd get rid of the tap water.

Yeah right, no tap water, dont think so mate, unlike you I cant afford bottled spring water for all my water changes
