What wet pet would be okay in a 55 gallon?

I was thinking a green terror but would one be okay with a pleco, pictus, and a ropefish?

Wet-pet=interactive large fish that would recognize me

An oscar would kill all the tank mates so forget that.


A green terror might work but it often depends on the individual. What about a Jack Dempsey? The Electric Blue ones are amazing! You could still add a few more fish in there as well, maybe some more pictus and something for the upper levels of the tank. Maybe a school of Oddessa Barbs? Or Black Ruby Barbs, Giant Danios would work well too.

I would disagree with the statement an oscar would 'kill all the other tankmates'. Oscars are one of the more peaceful larger cichlids and should get on well with plecs and pictus. There is a small issue that they may eat the rope fish if the size difference is large enough, but use of common sense should prevent this. However a 55 is too small for an oscar in my opinion.

If you can go up to a 75 then so much the better. The extra 6" of width really opens up stocking options, there aren't many 'wet pet' fish that I can think of for a 55 gallon - not true wet pets anyway. Common wet pets like oscars, midas, red devils etc. really need a 75, so I would urge you as much as possible to upgrade if you are considering these fish. Though I would be careful mixing with the ropefish.

12" width means a max size of 8" in my opinion. I think the suggestions of green terror/JD are probably the closest you will get to a true wet pet. Though GTs are renown for being timid, especially at a younger age.

Oscars & Quetzels ... potentially both well over 12" in length, and both way, way, way bigger than would comfortably fit in a 55G.

And even then, you seem to want to squeeze a "biggish" fish in that tank with a pleco (potentially 18" plus, depending on species ?), pictus and ropefish.

Personally, in a 55, I would consider a green terror, a the largest as a wet pet. With the pictus, OK it would be OK. The ropefish, itself, can potentially reach about 16", and needs a 75 G when growing into adulthood.

Reeeedfish, you need to do a bit of research about the fish you already own and any you are considering owning. Basically, a 55 is too small for an adult of any of the really intelligent traditional "wet pet" type species.

OK, thanks everyone, I'll save up and buy a 75 gallon. But hamfist, my pleco is a rhino pleco and is comftorable in my 55 gallon. However, my rope fish is happy for now but I now he will appreciate a 75 gallon. I did reaserch my fish before I bought them.

Wow, I just found an 80 gallon aquarium, a filter with 4 bio-wheels, t5 light strip, cooling fans. thermomtere, heater, and stand for 1,200$ Is this a good deal or not?

Not sure as I'm in the UK, but seems excessive to me. $1200 is £760 according to XE currency converter.

You can pick up a 75 gallon tank, filter, lights etc. for £400 easy in the UK I would say (got my 90 gallon + stand + filter + light + heaters for £75 - a rate bargin). So I wouldn't pay $1200 personally, but I don't know the US market rates - it seems excessive anyhow.
