Im so so so so confused about the marine type of tanks.
The thing is....I have a limmited amout of space to work with, its it:
total of 7 feet tall (from floor to cieling) a total of 3 feet wide (from the base of my bed to thewall of my room) and a total of 2 feet in depth (from the wall to where my door starts) i also gave a couple of inches for lieghway
I would have to make my own tank....i know that....but....the major problem would be is the point i only would have about a total of 400 dollars (US) to work with.
I do know all about freshwater tropical but nothing about marine. Marine fish seem much more interesting.
Thanks in advance

im a newbie at all this too, but a 7foot tall tank? you would need some damn impressive lights to keep much alive at the bottom of that....:)

i have just set up a small tank, heres a rundown of costs
tank 10 gallon - £36.60
pump - £15.95
powerhead - £7.94
ballast - £35
daylight and blue t5 bulbs - £14
2 hermit crabs - £8
7kg live rock - £70
heater - £15.99
bag if marine salt - £11
hydrometer - £13
thermometer - £1.25
sand - £3.50

total: £222.14

so a total in dollars od $399.73

i know stuff is cheaper for you guys over there, but i have spent your budget setting up a 10gallon tank, with no fish, so sump, no filter, and no protein skimmer.

best of luck, and maybe ebay will be an idea for some bargains??

I'd do some research first before buying anything. I'm from the UK so I'm not sure of prices of the equipment availble over there. try to fine out whats' good and whats not, i.e. some skimmers work some don't such as the cheaper ones. you could try looking round for second hand equipment. Like I said, I'm not from the US so I don't know the prices of equipment but you could try PM ingn ostrow, he maybe able to help more?

ste :)

Well I went out and bought a great good called You&Your Aquarium by Dick Mills and it explained alot to me.
Its said i am able to create a marine tank. The only down part is that the total cost of my own personal tank would be a total of $719.99. This is quite duable since christmas is comming up and i have 300 from working at a resturant =D . I just have to research mroe
btw if anyone has any tips for me that would be great! :fun:

UPDATE: I have calculated the total amount of fish I could hold! A whopping 18 inches of marine fish!!! WOOHOO this is gunna be great!!!
thanks for all ur help guys!!! im still interested in tips of yours ^^

keep getting books! they are the most important "first pieces of equipment"
for someone new. and try to get the most up to date. a great title is "the
concientious marine aquarist". this is a highly regarded book.

I just picked up a copy of "The Complete Book of the Marine Aquarium" this weekend at Petsmart, of all places. It seems to be pretty comprehensive, going through the equipment needed.... what you can expect to see during the cycle.... what types of algae you can expect to see showing up at what point.... and then has almost any common marine fish/coral/invert listed by their scientific name. It's the only book I've found in stores.... but I'll probably hit Amazon and find a few more to read before Christmas.
