So, today I went to one of my LFS just for a look around as I'm sure loads of us like to do.

When I got there I found they had some new additions - 3 male Bettas all in individual 1 litre perspex boxes with no filter or heater or anything. 2 of the Bettas were already dead and one of them was sitting there looking very sad and unwell. So basically, I got the hump and bought him! I've been running around for the last hour moving the 3 Sparkling Gourami that were in my 21L to my 60L with all my other fish and putting him in my 21L.

I know some people will say buying him was the wrong thing to do because it just enables the LFS to buy more but I can't save all the fish in the world but I can at least have a go with this one! Anyway, so this is him:

What I'd really like is your opinions on him coz I am quite concerned about all the darkish redishness around his head. Would you be worried? Is it normal? and what about the black round his gills? Normal or sickness?

What kind is he too?

I am of course aware he may die but at least I've given him a chance. He's sitting on the gravel behind the plants at the moment which I don't think is right but I'm hoping it's just the stress he's had today.

One last thing, if he does survive can I get him some tank mates (21L tank). I was thinking maybe Pygmy Corys?

It could just be his colouring, and that he isn't ill at all. I'm not 100% sure though, so wait for more replies just incase :)
As for his tail type, he's a veil tail, and very pretty too.
I don't think you did the wrong thing, especially if you liked him anyway :good:

Lol thanks. We've called him Sam!

He's come out a bit now.

as said it could be his colouring my white boy Sherbert has a bright red patch on his head  and around his eyes.

If he is perking up then i'd just keep an eye on him for now. i am one all for giving fish a chance thats how i ended up with Sherbert wouldn't change him for the world

The black around his gills looks like his beard underneath. Just keep an eye on him for a few days you'll be amazed at how much personality he had when he styles in.

his colour is lovely too and it looks like he is a veil tail.

Hi guys, thanks for replies.

He's still hiding down by the gravel...and I think I just frightened him but hopefully all will be ok  . I guess the next few days will be the teller, I'll keep you all posted.

The photo is not real clear on my computer but he looks like he could have a touch of dragon in him. As for him sitting on the bottom, well he's probably in shock at the moment as he has never been in such clean water before and he's taking a bit to adjust. You've rescued him and given him the best, its just wait and see now. Keep us in touch of his progress Im sure he'll pull through.

He looks loads better today, swimming around and everything. I'll try and get another photo later. What you mean dragon? Is that a type of Betta? Lol can I just say I did intend researching them more before I got one originally!

I don't have much experience with fish, but I love them a lot and I admire you for what you have done for that poor guy. I'm sorry for the other two, they didn't have any chance at all. Congratulations! You do have a big heart. Wish you both all the best!

Thanks :)

Bit blurry, but here he is today.

I just got him to eat some frozen brine shimp but he wouldn't eat the freeze dried bloodword I tried with earlier. The bloke in the shop said he's only had frozen bloodworm since they've had him and as far as he knows before that too. I just told him that if he thinks I can afford to feed him frozen food every day then he's got another thing coming (not really, I do know he's a fish  )

If you google Dragon bettas you will see what I mean. The one I've got has a red pattern running down the front of his face and his scale pattern looks kinda like armor plating. Once you see the photos you'll want one. But hey its good to hear hes getting better thanks to you. :good:

Oh I see what you mean, mine has that red pattern on his face too. Ha that's what I thought might be "sickness".

He still seems to be doing well. Ordered him some proper Betta food yesterday too!

Haven't got it yet, just been giving him the brine shrimp. Need to work out how to wean him on to other stuff :S

Ok so it came whilst I was at work today. Can I just check, Bettas are top feeders aren't they? It's just he doesn't eat the food if it just sits on the surface but if I push it down so it floats around then he does. He seems to prefer the bottom half of the tank too?
