My betta tank has settled nicely, so I'm turning my attention now to an algae eater... and it's about time :/ because the Java ferns are getting this brown feathery stuff growing on it. What on earth is it? It looks like Spanish Moss  Beta doesn't seem bothered by it, though.

Nothing to worry about - you've got baby java ferns! They grow small plants on their leaves, and these plants then drop so that the plant will propagate. You may eventually find yourself removing some of the plants so you can better see your fish. The good news is you'll never need to buy new plants :D
