weird lil square fish guy?

I think it has to do with the fact that oceanic fish have been around for millions of years and they have had time to mutate and evolve over so long of a time. much land based creatures are limited in migrational areas, and are more susceptible to global catastrophies such as the great extinctin in the mesionic period, when the dinosaurs became extinct.

reef fish are particularly interesting as so many fish interact with other fish and those fish know what to do, for instance many fish make pit stops for cleanings and particular shrimp know what fish to clean and what fish to stay away from. the same goes for fish, they know what shrimp are cleaners and which ones are not. and will sit there and allow them to go through there gills and mouths and take care of any infections or parasites.

they have had 100's of millions of years to establish this symbiosis. pond and river fish havent as there enviroments change more often, rivers change route, ponds dry up.

reefs dont change nearly as often(untill recently due to man)

Its sad to think of how many species we lose to extinction every day without even knowing they are there.

It's funny, my grandmother was telling me about a box-like fish she saw once the other week, and we didn't know what it was... now I can tell her!

one has to wonder at what point of evolution these fish became so absolutely bizzar

perhaps it is square so it can't easily fit into the round mouth of another fish...*shrugs*

Sorry to be a nerd  , but i believe their shape actually helps them glide through water. A recent study of several species of box fish found their aerodynamic shape helped them remain stable whilst swimming, and also swim faster through water. Their "corners" also produce a vortex, similar to that seen at the wing tip of a plane! :)
