my male guppy was only trying to mate with one female all of the time. I do want fry, but I also want happy fish. I was afraid he was stressing her out while the other female swam around the tank without a care in the world. So I finally decided to set up my 7.5 gallon (23.3 liter) tank for the male. he seems happy in there, even by himself. the one female was relieved at first that he was gone. then she apparently needed revenge and started  to chase the other female when she got close. hmmmmm. they used to be a trio swimming along side each other all of the time. its almost as if bubbles was keeping his ladies in order!

why do you  think my guppy suddenly turned mean?

it could be that the male will favourite one female over the others. if he is chasing 24/7 and you can tell that she is getting skinny and or not eating then it is bad with what he is doing, i would just leave him in there with the female, if she is larger, what usually happens she will just ram him to tell him to back off.
if she is now chasing the other females then its not good.
are you sure that she is female?
also there should be 3 females per male, or you can have an all male tank, which is nice too.

Is the favorite female the biggest and roundest?  If so, she is probably also the alpha female and now that the male is gone she is in charge.

no, she is skinnier. I am sure she is female because she has a gravid spot. she IS eating though. I think I might get another female and keep the male separate. it would make since that she is the alpha female. she was there first and she is older. I am also pretty sure she is only skinny because she had fry not to long ago. Do you think if I get another female she wont always pick on the one? will the male get lonely by himself?
thanks

To be honest, I'd not add more fish unless you are planning to get a bigger tank... since your females have been with your male chances are a month from now you will have lots of fry.

might mean shes in charge. like mine probably is too.

Some chasing is normal.  As long as you aren't seeing nipped fins it is their way of communicating.  With a 23 litre tank it might also be their way of saying there isn't enough territory for them or hiding places.

Too small a tank and not enough of the species is likely to be the cause of most of these related issues and as PrairieSunflower says, some chasing is normal. snork6 and guppy2002 both seem to have issues so if they confirm the size of the tank and its inhabitants then maybe we can advise.
