First place at State 4-H horse show!! WHOOEE!!
Hey all,
I now have this weird disease in my 55 gallon freshwater. All of my fish (especially the guppies) are acting listless, and they have white torn up edges on their fins and some of the barbs have whitish torn up places on the sides of their bellies. The guppies seem to be losing their balance and they aren't really willing to eat, though they will try. Cories and Dojos are doing fine, but the rest of them aren't doing that great.
I tested the water parameters, here they are:
pH- 6.2
Ammonia- 0 ppm
Nitrite- 0 ppm

Foods:
Flake
TetraMin
Shrimp pellets
Hikari sinking wafers
freeze dried bloodworms

I have just started a treatment of Maracyn (not Maracyn 2)
I added some aquarium salt, and I added some stress coat a few days ago, have been doing that since like three days ago. Started the maracyn treatment yesterday.

WHAT DO I DO???!!!! I already have had 2 guppies die, And one is getting ready to... :-( :byebye:
Please reply ASAP!!

Should I add some ph up? I've got some.
I'll try the tempature adjustment.
I last did a water change towards the end of last month, I'll do another one tomorrow. I changed about... 25%. The tank has been set up for a couple of years now, It's DEFINITELY not due to new tank problems.
OH yes it was cycled. I added my previous 3 platies out of my very first tank and a pair of guppies. Though that wouldn't matter since that was like 3 years ago. Wow. time flies.
ANYWZ,
If this helps, here is a list of the fish in the tank-
1 corydoras paleatus
2 corydoras melanistus
2 dojos
1 upside down catfish
3 tiger barbs
3 red phantom tetras
5 glo-lite tetras
4-5 pork chop tetras
5 harlequin tetras
3 white clouds
1 platy
2 sunset dwarf gouramis

Thanks so much for your help and keep replying!!!

Hi Guppygirl :)

Please do not do anything more, except a good sized water change, until you sort through things and determine what is wrong with your fish. Do not change the temperature or adjust the pH.

I see that you have added salt and Maracyn. Why did you begin treatment with these things? What did you originally think was wrong with them?

What is the temperature now? How about NitrAtes?

Please do not add any more salt. This is harmful to loaches and catfish. Just do a good water change to reduce it and do not add more. Is there a chance you can move the catfish and loaches to another tank since they do not seem to be affected by the problem the other fish are having?

Well Inchworm (hey you've got my nickname!!!)
I first thought it was fin rot. This has gone on for a week or so now, at first I thought it was just a little stress, so I added some stress coat. I added some guppies from my friend a few weeks ago, apparently that was the cause.
temp now is about 74-75, and no, It is impossible to net out the dojos and catfish, I would have to take out all the plants, then chase them for an hour. Oh well.
I don't have a nitrates test, but I'll look for one.
gotta jet,
Robin

Hi. I definately not a expert but this sounds like dropsy to me. I don't even know about water parameters. I experienced it recently and lost 3guppies and a lemon tetra.

Are the affected fish swimming around kind of like they have lost their sense of balance. Or do they tend to stay at the bottom, not swimming much. *Check for bloatedness. It is hard to cure. I put in antibiotics and only lost 4 fish but that is pretty high considering I only had 10. I also passed it on to my betta by using the same net. He is in a different tank. Good luck. Do some research on dropsy.
