Weird Algae Issue

Hi people,

i have 2 tanks at home. one is a community and the other is going to be a breeding tank.

the community i have had for a while, but have never had any issues.

the other tank has a weird issue. While there is no fish in it, all is fine. the water is clear as day. I even put bits of fish food in it to help build the bacteria.

As soon as i put fish in it, i get a floating algae. It doesnt really grow on anything, but the stones get a brownish coating and the water has a green tint.

all the specs of the water seem ok, and the fish dont seem to be bothered by it.

i took the fish out and put them back in the community tank, dropped some algae eater in the tank, 1/2 water change, and its all good again.

put fish back in, green water, and this is within 1 to 2 days of putting the fish in.

any ideas?

no direct sunlight,

it doesnt get any more light than my other tank, tho i am seeing if cutting that back will make any difference

i was having the light on when i didnt have any fish in it too, and that didnt generate any algae.

the two tanks are pretty much the same. there are no live plants in either. and when i was drying out the affected tank the first time it happened, i put all the ornaments and plants that were in there in to the unaffected tank without any issue.

they have different types of filters, but the filter in the affected tank is meant to be a better filter than the one in the unaffected tank (unaffected is a canister filter and the other one sucks water up to the top then it trickles thru a black sponge and then a filter pad with charcoal in it)

i am trying putting less light now.

Different types of lights onthe two tanks? Are the lights rated the same and provide the same light "temperature" (i.e. K rating)

not sure about the light. im getting an new light for the good tank today so i will ask the lfs. the light on the bad tank came with it so i will be able to check.

im also taking some of the water in to be tested as well.
