I live in a council built property, which has a one floor granny flat underneath me.

Being a kindly neighbour, I am worried about the weight of a tank on my floor, I would hate to flood them ;)

So just out of curiosity, how much weight can a floor take?

I know I have floorboards, but i'm not sure whats underneath them, concrete? etc.

Say I eventually decide to get a BIG tank :hey: would it go through the floor?

ask the council's advice floor strength varies but 1ltr water =1kg plus your tank/stand and gravel my tank complete is somewhere between 300-350 kg

I pondered the same question - being in the same situation. Being only a small flat tho - a huge tank would neither fit in the place - and if it did it would seriously decrease the space.

I wanted a 6ft6in Rena (the 2 meter one) - but the logistics didnt work out. but to answer your question...

IF the tank is against a wall (as it would be) and IF that wall was present downstairs (Loadbearing) in the same position, then your joists (7 inch) would support the weight of a 150 gallon tank easily, as the floorboards will distribute the weight. Try not to worry about it. .........But ensure youre insured :)

insured  my carpet was £1.99 a square metre, the water in my tank is probably worth more!

Seriously though, my living room is pretty spacious, i've already mentioned to the OH that if i'm still as hooked this time next year we might be looking at getting a bigger tank.

He doesn't know how big they go yet though :hey:

I've also talked him round to getting two corn snakes this week, either i'm doing something right, or he's doing something very wrong

imagine the damage 260 liters of water could do as with my tank and how pleased the council would be if the ceiling below collapsed-you need to check that your not personally liable for a flood-if you are get insurance
