I'm not having a go at you all or complaing I'm just speaking from my experience. You all seem to go way over the top when talkin about males and females being in the same tank. I've had a male and a female in the same tank for months now and neither have got a scratch on them... My platies on the other hand are violent lol.

What I'm saying is anyone who likes both male and female Betta's like I do give them ago there both great additions to the tank.

Thats just about enough information to let a newbie try it and end up with a dead betta. Once in a while there is a wimpy male that wants to be a buddy to the female, but most of the time if they are not trying to spawn, then the male rips scales off her, and either kills her or she gets an infection. If someone is going to try this..be advised...it is not recommended.

I disagree completely. There are always exceptions to rules, but why risk it.

Well said and I totally agree.

Is the point of this thread to say that one person and their two fish have blown everything that everybody has ever thought/learned/known about bettas out of the water?

I've got a male and 2 females in the same tank ,they,ve been together now for about a month,I thought it was ok to keep them together, they never bother each other.

I'd love to keep some of mine together. They'd be beautiful in the tanks, and it would cut down on the individual betta homes that are taking over every flat surface in my house

I think I'd be very cautious in attempting it though. So far, even my females don't care to share a tank.I might try a divided tank first.Even then I'm not sure I'd put them together...I don't want to risk losing any fish needlessly.I do keep some individuals in my community tanks and they do fine with the platies and cories.

Koda

I believe that the common phrase used all the time in these boards are:

It depends on the fish

I think people have to look at both sides of the table.

One side says you should try it because it's nice having a male and female together.

The other side says you shouldn't, it's not worth the risk, and you could end up with a dead betta.

As always, look in between the two arguments for your solution. While it is a huge risk to put a male and female betta together, it could turn out in your favor, being the fish showing no aggression towards eachother.

I've heard more stories from people new to bettas, that put the males and females together. The bettas act just fine, and the male is one happy camper. They keep them together for awhile, then come home one evening and the female, (or even the male), is laying on their side with the pectoral fins tore off. They have no dorsal and there is scales missing. Sometimes the other fish bit so hard, when they tore the scales off, the fish is bleeding. The person can't believe this happened since they had gotten along so great. When the one betta would not spawn when the other wanted too, attitudes changed. If you put the bettas together, sooner or later, something is going to happen. When it happens, it gets intense. Bettas are like people, they all have different attitudes about things. You can find some that get along, but most of them don't. Bettas are naturally fighting fish.

I find that if you want to place Bettas within the same tank, you must be very careful and watch them as much as possible for the first few days.

I once had two male Bettas, all of the same hatching.

One male was a perfect gentlemen when the females when I had to move him to clean his tank during an outbreak of fungus.

The other was a horror to the girls, I soon learned that if he was going anywhere during cleaning his tank, he was going in a small 1 gallon jar for the period.

I'm saying it to annoy you all and
blown everything that everybody has ever thought/learned/known about bettas out of the water?
I'm just saying that it seems to me that you all seem to go over the top when it concerns betta's. and if f250fisherman is right then I've had 2 wimpy males since the first male and female I got were living together fine for a few month till I had a very bad spot of white spot and lost most of my fish to it. These 2 have been together for a couple of months and neither have had a scrath on them.

Alright possibly only try it if you have a larger tank since my gf has 2 smaller tanks and when she puts her male and female together she does get beat up abit.

Any fish you get can be nasty tho as was said it all depends on the fish like one of male platies if I put another male in with him he goes mental.

I mean don't shun the idea just because its been given a bad rep.

YES SHUN THE IDEA!!!!!!!unless you know your fish... i know with both of my males i cant even bring a picture of a female near either of them without them going berserk and trying to break their tanks!!!

i care about my fish too much to even risk it.

if you notice though, most of the more experienced betta keepers do not keep males and females together...just an observation...

Doesn't matter how long they have been together, as soon as one or the other wants to spawn and the other doesn't...lets just say you won't need to worry about the other one anymore :X

your know im not sure about that, it depends on the agression of the fish, i could c some male bettas being able to survive with some females and vise versa but it really shouldn't be done. if its working for u then great but dont suggest it or anything. in know for a fact my male and anyone of my females will rip each other apart -_-
