I live in York (UK) and the water here has a pH 7.4 and 15GH, I want to keep some Malawi's and Tangs (seperate tanks), but need to know if this water is near enough to be acceptable. I dont really want to be having a chemistry class everytime I change the water :-(

I know that the water has to be alkaline (and it is, but is it enough?) and hard (but is it too hard?), most of what I can find out says you need a pH of 8 and no more than 14GH. :dunno:

Thanks in advance....
Dan

Your water will be absolutely fine. Its about the same as mine (Manchester UK) and i've never had a problem. Malawi's should do fine in a ph bewteen 6 and 8 as most of them are tank reared anyway. :D

The fish will do fine at that ph though some, especially from Tanganyika, will not be able to breed it it.

If your still concerned, add a small peace of tufa rock in your tank ;) can also buy some elements, and buffers, but can seem pretty costly!

I wouldn't try to change your water with anything except natural elements like tuffa rock. Forget the additives etc that you can buy. If you start using them its nearly impossible to keep your water at the same ph etc.
