OK Sgt. Newbie is back in action, When I fill my tank where shoould I get the water from, In my 3 other fresh water tanks I take it from the tap and then treat it, Is this acceptable for saltwater

for the first fill, then you can use tap water with out treating it, just heat it and salt it and leave it for about 4-6 weeks with no light and no fish/inverts. after that use RO water only for water changes. some use DI water but I prefer to use RO.

ste :)

Or if you want to get up and running without the water wait you can usually buy R/O water from your LFS. You can get gallons at a time. It is more expensive than "free" tap water though.

what does RO stand for and hwo much is it per gal. were you live?

just wondering -_-

RO = Reverse Osmosis which is literally pure water. No containments of any kind, no minerals, no vitamins, nothing.

we have a machein that does that in front of our food store (fry's marketplace) you just bring a bucket and put in 4 quarters and it gives you 1G is that a good deal? or is that to cheap to be real RO -_-

It really depends on your location. here in the UK our tap water varies greatly from different parts of the country.
The problem with tap water is that it usually carries phosphates and that is bad news for a marine setup as it will spring forth hair algea in abundance.
RO_ water is far better as all these nutrients are removed. Also, our water authorities periodically put chemicals into the water to kill off freshwater shrimps and creatures that live in the pipes etc. if you happen to fill you tank with water that has been treated with this then you can kiss you shrimps, inverts and probably your fish goodbye. RO is by fare the best.
I use Natural seawater (as its good quality where i live and redaily available) but i top up with Ro water to keep the system stable.

I get my RO water at my LFS for .32 cents a gallon. $1 a gallon is way too much, at least here in So. California.

You also have to watch those that sell R/O water too tho.. If they dont change their cartridges regularly, the crap gets right through.. Ask for a tds(total disolved solids) test..
