Totally agree with the above- the priority is to reduce nitrates ASAP by frequent water changes.
If the water hardness and pH in the tank is same as out of tap, then it won't change when you do water changes.
Can't really say if the water harness/ pH is appropriate to your fish or not, as we don't know what fish you have - most can acclimatise to "unnatural" water chemistry.(for them)
