I think I need one because my LFS tests my water at the moment, but it's 20 miles away.
And i've learnt the hard way to not believe everything they say (told me to put fish in the day after tank set-up, 5 out of 6 died within 5 days) , and also want to know how it is myself.

Is there any make/brand I should get?

How much are they usually?

thanks!

They can cost between £4-7 depending on the test ... pH cheap ... Nitrate expensive. You can also buy what are called Master tests that contain most if not all the tests you'll need and these can be got for as little as £19 (rrp £26) so hunt around.

I use a mixture of API and Tetra tests ... I bought mine individually as I needed them ... and TBH I've used the water hardness tests about twice and I can't see any reason to use them again ... likewise with the Nitrate and pH tests.

On the other hand I have used the ammonia tests and the nitrite ones regularly ... they are also indispensable if you are planning on doing a fishless cycle.

Hi Hawkins,

Most people on here seem to recommend the api test kits.

I bought the api master test kit which tests PH, high PH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate.

Got mine from pets at home, about £20.

Have used mine EVERY day since starting the fishless cycle.
