i usually keep my tanks at around 24 degrees C but on hot days like today they get up to nearly 30. How harmful is this to my fish. They don't seem to be affected. I have plenty of airation and water circulation in both tanks.

Thanks again peeps. I like this forum a lot. A lot of very kind and helpful people !!

can be very harmful but its natural. if the temperature is raised too fast it can stress the fish out badly and even kill some! are you sure your thermometer is not just picking up room temp? try getting one that sits in the water for more accurate results! Aieration helps aswell.

A 2 ltr empty bottle of pop, fill it with water place in the freezer leave a 1 inch gap for water to expand from the top. When your tank gets high just float it it will counter the heat and knock of a few c

I've got a digital thermometer that i can put the needle in water and it picks up the temperature. Getting similar readings from that. Fish seem to be ok with it though as its been about a month since i set up my first tank in the conservatory

How safe this is will depend an awful lot on what fish you keep... What fish species have you got?

Cracking the lid open and having a fan blowing over the water surface may also help, or in the direction of the tank at least.

Try small partial water changes with slightly cooler water.

Keep the lights off.

Increased aeration and cooling methods will help but most community fish will be able to cope with temp increases. 'The wild' doesn't have a thermostat.

+ 1 :good:

Also having a tank in the conservatory is not the best move, for one it WILL get hot and two it will get lots of algae when the sun comes in....

Unfortuantely, i have nowhere else to keep my tanks for now !! I do keep the in the cooler, more shady part of the conservatory which is the best i can do for now.

As has been mentioned, What fish have you got? Some fish are more resistant than others to fluctuating temperature... When it does get hot, do as above: Turn off heater and lights, use ice in floating plastic bottles to cool it down and a fan blowing across the surface. It wont do much at all if its just hitting the glass.

I have guppies, zebra danio's a plec and bronze corrys.

i think over 25 gets uncomfortable for corys. i float ice bags and prop the lid open just to drop it a bit. lots of people do, seems effective :)

although i never had any problem with corys before and i lived in Zimbabwe where it was often over 30 C !!

Yep.. 30, 31c Is ok.. Nothing to worry about.
Just aim a fan at surface to keep the evaporation down..
