I'm still setting up my tank, and I would like to include a water pump to help me carrier out my water changes. in both direction.

Would i need two pumps one to take water out and a second to put water back in. has anyone ever set up such system. any advise or Ideas would be appreciate.

water changes 10-15g per week

thank

Jason

I don't think it will be worth using a pump to drain 15gals of water its only 6 buckets, from experience of doing water changes on large tanks by the time you get the pump and drain pipe setup you could have probably drained and refilled the tank with 15gals of water. so if I were you I'd save the money on the pumps and buy some beer to ease your thirst from carrying the buckets.

do agree :D , however to get my new tank in the first place I had to talk the wife around :) , my old tank only contained 29g and I was always forever splashing water all over the carpet upstairs during water changes - Have to admit that the carpet now look crap, although I will not admit that to the wife, I do want a happy live.

The new tank is in my main living room, it is only 100g, and I’m not the greatest water changer in the world, it would be a small price to pay for complete happiness.

Surely I’m not the only person who as ever looked at doing this? Has anyone ever tried?

Hi Jason, it would be easy to pump water out using a powerhead with a t piece and 2 way valve. This is how I empty my Hydroponic resovoir. But how would you condition the water before putting it in if it came straight from the tap. I,ve always wondered how people using the python gravel cleaner condition thier water?

A power gravel cleaner with a long tube and a reverse osmoses water conditioner although this is not cheap

I will tap off from my existing outlet pipe - good idea, wish i had through of it:)

the tank is only a couple of feet from my backgarden, i was thinking of putting at storagebutt outside, however i would then have the issue of heating the water.

Hi Jason,
My 70gal tank is next to an outside wall and Iv'e drilled a hole thro the wall and pushed a tube thro it and sealed it in. All I do is put the end in the tank and sipon the water straight out onto the patio. I then fill 2 x 25 litre plastic jerry cans with water using the mixer tap to get the temp spot on. (I use a digital thermometer) Then add Stress Coat to condition the water and neutralise the chloramine (damn the poxy water board). I lift each jerry can onto the top of tank and open the taps.........Hey presto, 50 litre, 11 gal water change in about 20 mins, no pumps, no mess :p

Have now got a plan - thanks all

I intend to T off my XP3 outlet pipe - directly outside the house this will allow me to remove water - I now have a ehiem sluge remover

I have obtained a ehiem pump to take water from a large water container (treated) directly to the tank.

will post once finished

thanks all

Ob1,
I have just set up a very similar system, but I am usung my XP3 to empty AND fill my tank. I bought 2 T adapters with built in diverter taps and have fitted these to the inlet and outlet of the filter. The outlet goes straight outside thro the wall and the inlet goes into a water butt containing the conditioned water.
All I have to do to empty the tank is turn the divert tap on the outlet to empty.
All I have to do to fill the tank is put the end of hose into the water butt and turn the tap on the inlet hose to fill.
It works a treat :D
