Water Outlet Gaurd (check Out Op)

Hi.

On an over head filter system does anybody know of an idea to gaurd against fry being sucked in?

After finding most of the fry swiming around in the canopy filter I filled the slotted end cap of the inlet tube with coarse media.

Ok, so that works but I am still getting one or two fry getting stuck, head first in the slots. They are probably trying to get the food particals trapped in the media then can't get away

Any ideas (apart from an UGF)?

put netting or something similar over the outlet to prevent them from being sucked in.

I have found that putting a piece of pantyhose, or sometimes a non-chemically contacted or altered sponge is good to cover up the slots on the filter intake. But the current for the input and output are lowered by doing this.

Nets & screens plug easily, a piece of sponge slid over the intake takes forever to plug, and adds to the amount of media your filter uses.

Poke a hole in it with a knife, slide it over the intake.

Best ideas are the simplest! Off to the LFS to find a fine foam cylinder to stick on the end of the tube.

I get the sponge used for pond filters and cut a nice big square of that and nick the centre for the outlet pipe to sit in. Not only does it stop the fry / small fish being sucked out it also cultivates some nice buggy things for the fry to feed on.

I use un assembled top fin baggie cartridges, I cut the material, sew it and fit it on the tube. That worked great for my angel fry, but I also used a sponge filter ( a power head with a sponge attached to the intake) and that worked amazingly as well.
