i was wondering if anyone uses any form of power head in theyre refugium, as i have ( although healthy) a film of some sort over the top of mine ( in the sump) of course the water flows, but i was just wondering if i should maybe add something extra- even an air pump to add a little movement?- theres loads of life in there in the form of shrimp, copepods so cant be having that much of a neg effect..

test results

Hi Shelagh,

If I remember rightly, the water flowed pretty slowly through the refugium section in my sump. I think the flow through the sump should only be about 3-5 times the tank volume. So long as you have water moving through there, the water won't stagnate. I wouldn't worry about the film too much. Its probably contains tiny food particles that will collect on the macro algae like chaeto, which the pods will feed on. If its particularly bad, you could use some filter wool to mop some of it up.
