my new black molly fish just gave birth, and we have one baby that survived. is it first off dangerous to keep it in the same tank as the mother, 2 guppies, and another molly? and should the filter be kept on a strong setting or will the baby just get sucked up inside?

if i lower the strength of the filter i am worried about the water getting cloudy though.

any advice would be great!

thanks!

Just put a pair of tights over the filter with an elastic band.

First of all, The mother will eat the fry and so will th others if they can get them, after a fish gives birth it is very hungry so you shjould feed her well afterwards.

I would keep the fry in a breeding trap for about 4-8 weeks, depending on the size of them, or setup another small tank for fry.

Having lots of plants for cover in your main tank can help the fry to survive also as it will give them plenty of cover.

As for the filter, really its best to have undergravel if fry are being bred, if internal then i would do as i said and fish out what u can nad put them in a trap :)

Hope this helps and good luck.

Better than been sucked up and minced by the filter ;)

All my endlers fry, have undergravel and they are fine and i have hundreds of them, all bred from originaly 8 endlers, the tank i have with a internal filter does not do as well has the one with undergravel but i guess its just what the person is use to using.

Personally i like undergravel and have the best sucess with the tanks with it in.

I agree though the tights over the vents with elastic band is a good idea, only problem with that is the fry can still get suck on to it and die off the stress anyways, at least with undergravel, they can hide under the stones and come out of them as they please.

Like i say though, each to thier own prefrence :)

Sponge filter & a bare bottom tank, no sticking or sucking. A sponge slit & slid over the intake works better at diffusing the flow, and adds that much more bio filtration to your filter.
