Ya gotta ask somewhere. Anyway this is a stupid question, common sense should gimme the answer, actually it does, but I'd feel better coming from exdperts.

Here goes-

If my tank water evaporates what do I do Keep in mind this is just a standard FW setup, convicts are in it Just refill it with water (with declorinator added to it)?

Also don I need to add anything to the water?

As long as you do regular water changes, you can add dechlorinated tap water and it will be fine.

if you have a coverglass on the tank the amount of water lost to evaporation should be minimal. Then when you do your weekly or fortnightly water changes you just drain some out and refill the tank. No need to worry about topping up during the week.

I live in Arizona and I loose a lot of water due to evaporation. I do weekly to bi weekly water changes and loose easily a couple inches between each change and I do have an all glass canopy

I used to add dechlor water but now that I change my water more often... I just wait for it to get a few inches low then do a water change and top it off :)

the no-no is to keep adding water as it evaporates without changing water. I learned that the hard way a long time ago. the water evaporates but all the nasties in the water don't so if you don't actually change the water those nasties build up and do bad things to your tank!

Topping off isn't the best option. It won't hurt from time to time but as mentioned, don't let that take the palce of water changes. The main reason is that when water evaporates, only the water leaves the tank. All the other impurities stay behind so simply topping off can cause them to build up over time.

As has also been mentioned, covering the tank will help. The smaller the openings in the cover, the less water lose you will experience. If you could cover the tank 100% (not really possible because of the filter lines, etc.) you would probably see almost no water loss at all.
