When do you guys and gals add your dechlorinator when you are doing you water changes...
Only asking as Ive seen a few "Python" systems that add tap water straight to the tank, so I presume that they add the De-chlorinator after they have added the water ?

Would this not start to kill the Bacs as it would contain Chlorine etc ?

I add it once all the water is in the tank as I use Seachem Prime and it's such a minute amount that measuring it between 10 buckets or so is a bit much :)

None of the above. I add directly to the tank whilst adding water.
And to answer your question, no. Obviously you turn off your filter whist you fill up. This way you lose no bacteria.

that was easy lol how do you start one of those? I mean the voting things.

30 litre bucket

fill with water

add correct dosage dechl.

put heater and mini water circulator in bucket.

when temp is correct, remove old water and use water pump to fill up tank with conditioned water.

I would recommend adding to the bucket before the water. That way it will be properly mixed in and start working as you add the water.

Ditto Jetman, I dechlorinate in the buckets because my tank is newly cycled and I don't want to risk exposing bacteria to chlorine until the tank is fully established.  Probably not even then, since my tank is small it's only one or two buckets a week so not much work for me!

If you're adding tap water directly to the tank then I'm pretty sure you're supposed to dose dechlorinator for the whole tank before you add it.

Yep, that is right.

This is right. You dose for the whole volume of the tank but it makes no difference if you add it before during or after as long as your filter is off:)

What about those with internal filters ?

The Chlorine would get into the filter if you added it after you filled the tank ?

Very true altho those with internals usually have small tanks so its not really worth doing it this way really
Might as well use a bucket. But if you insisted then yes I suppose your right.

I think the point is that the concentration of chlorine/chloramine in commercial water supplies is there to kill off loose, floating bacteria, not robust colonies like we have in our filters.

If you're doing water changes of 50% or less, the chlorine concentration wouldn't be enough to kill off a whole filter full of bacteria, even if you did add the dechlorinator at the end. I always add it to the tank before I start refilling though.

I used to do bucket changes so added a small amount to every bucket that went back in! TEDIOUS
I then found on here about the python style watsits and DIYed my own. So I now put the dechlor (enough for the whole tank) in a large jug and hold that beneath my inflowing fish water so it fills and overflows into the tank - then it's already diluted once it gets to the fish - my own idea, I don't know if that's totally necessary! I do turn off my filter whilst doing the water change (and clean it out, if it's due).

Guys...

If you have a tank over 50L and are still using buckets may I suggest switching to a python? 50% WC on my 180L used to take 2hours now it takes 15mins tops.

I add the dechlor once the tank is filled because I have a planted tank and read that the compounds, irons and such are things which the plants adore. So I usually wait a few mins (5-10) before adding dechlor and then a couple of mins before swithing the canister back on.

I turn off everything in the tanks take 40-50% of old tank water out. Then add my Dechlorinator to the tank then connect a hose up to my shower at the correct temp and bobs your uncle and fanny's your aunt.
