If i boil the tap water or leave it sit for 24hrs, will that remove all the chlorine??

the chlorine will gas off if left to sit, however some water companies use chloramine which is a combination of chlorine and ammonia, this will not gas off and you need to use a dechlorinator to get rid of it.

you can get in touch with your local water supplier and find out if they use chlorine or chloramine.

why are you thinking of not using dechlor, is it the cost? because you can use pond dechlor which is exactly the same stuff but designed for much bigger concentrations of water so it lasts infinitely longer.

yes the cost. i went through 2 big bottles just trying to cycle a SW tank. I am boiling the water atm. the pond products are more expensive here.

or how long do i let it sit for?

they may be more expensive but they go much further so when you work it out over time they actually cost you less.

are you using RO or anything like that for the SW tank? because usually people use RO and then they don't need to dechlorinate. It's unusual to try a SW tnk without using RO.

i use tap water. filter and LR, i dont need RO

ok up to you, if it's for a reef tank you def need to use dechlor because of the heavy metals, these won't be removed by letting the water stand or boiling it, just by dechlor.

if you have corals or inverts then the heavy metals in undechlorinated water will kill them.

Pond dechlorinator is much cheaper in the long run, I stumbled across some at a LFS who recommended it, never thought of it before. Would never use 'regular' dechlorinator now, its just a rip off. One bottle will last me all year and cost the same price as normal dechlorinator, I use Pond Medic from Kokney Koi or something along those lines off eBay. Postage to Canada would probably not be that expensive if it is truely so overpriced there.

EDIT: Mine also removes heavy metals I think, so no problem there.

i don't have reef's or corals. just two LR's and 3 small fish. what are some pond dechlorinator brands that you recommend, maybe i'am looking at the wrong products that's why it is expensive.

I use Pond Medic kokney koi, though there will undoubtably be other brands out there I'm happy with this one. A £5 bottle (250ml) treats 3750 UK gallons (nearly 17,000 litres).

EDIT: £5 is equal to 8.7 Canadian dollars, forgot you were in canada :p

my LFS doesn't seem to have pond medic products. how many hours will it take for the chlorine to vapour?
