Just wondering what's best to do,
I'm pretty sure alot of people (including myself) add the water conditioner to there tap water just before it goes into the tank but does the water conditioner actually work that fast? for smaller water changes i guess it wouldn't be a problem (correct me if i'm wrong though).

If i was to do a big water change (40-50%) would it be best to add the water conditioner say a day before into some big 25L drums with the tap water,
then it'll have chance to neutralise harmful chlorine, chloramines, and dissolved metals?
Of course the pH of the water in the drum is going to raise too if it's sitting there for so long? what's not bad if your tank has a higher pH anyway?

Or does it work fast enough that there's not much difference?

Thanks for filling my head with more knowledge once again :good:

P.s the conditioner is NUTRAFIN AQUA PLUS..
Feel free to throw forward any better brands :fun: but for this water change that will be used.

i use seachem prime .. best thing since sliced bread tbh :) i used 5 DROPS per my 10 litre bucket (not m/l like aqua plus which i used to use), cost me like £5 off ebay nd its lasting me ages lol

i just add it into the bucket before it goes in the tank as i dont want my PH to get any higher by leaving it out.. its high enough as it is
thats just what i do though i dont think theres a right and wrong way to do this but most will prob say dechlorinate over night i reckon ;)

Dechlorinator works nearly instantly. Think of how when you put some chocolate mix into a glass of milk & stir it in, just that fast.

Some time back we had a rep from Tetra do a program on dechlorinators at our club meeting, using a tagging agent to show chlorine & chloramine with a yellow tint to the water. When dechlorinator neutralizes the chlorine & chloramine the tagging agent went away. With a quick swirl a good dechloranator works in seconds. With a cheaper product it will work the same, though you often have to use much more than the manufacturer suggests.

As suggested it works in a blink of an eye. However, my thoughts are that when you add conditioner to the tank you dose for the capacity of the tank, regardless of the amount of new water added but if you dose a container of water before adding to the tank you dose for that amount.

I am not saying that it is fact, just my way of doing it :good:

I've always wondered about that too lol, as i used to add the conditioner to the tank & did the same as you.
I now have a few 25 Litre Drums that i fill and dose then leave it for a few min :)

I probably have been doing it wrong for years now but I add a bit to the water just before I start filling the tank and add some after I finish, still so far I have not had any problems and have grown some large healthy old fish. Also I use the pond stuff as cost is important to me esp with a large tank and I always used to have a few other 4' tanks.

Well it made sense to me  I use a couple of 25 Ltr containers that I use to store dechlorinated and temperature balanced water. I have a mark on my tank at the level when that amount of water is removed.........not rocket science :look:

It's easy to splash the dechlorinating fluid about with 'gay abandon' but one day you'll have to buy another batch  and to me that's the beer money gone for the week

Use pond dechlorinator instead - much cheaper and lasts for months! :good:
