Someone recently put a post on here about de-chlorinators and they pice per gallon of treated water. Does anyone know which post it was I've been hunting for it without success, and I;m in need of de-chlorinator. Thanks

The best water conditioner is Seachem Prime in terms of functionality and cost per gallon.

Tetra's Aquasafe is also very good but less cost effective.

Chloram X is a good affordable water conditioner but is not as good as prime.

Some water conditioners remove ammonia or nitrite. Others "Detoxify it" this just means its complexed in a way that cant hurt your fish. Your biofilter can still use it.

Spanishguy is right with the dechlorinators. The absolute cheapest way I've found is to mix your own with sodium thiosulfate, the active ingredient in Prime that neuteralizes chlorine & chloramine. At $4.50 for enough to mix 2 gallons of dechlorinator, & 2 drops per gallon for chlorine & chloramines I have enough dechlorinator to do....

How many drops are in a gallon?

Sure have been using the water conditioner, but the stuff I had came with the second hand tank I bought, and I know there was a brilliant article on here recently where someone had done all the maths etc. Never mind it will be an excercise to stretch my own brain with later, :S

The only problem with this is that in dechlorifying water containing chloramines, sodium thiosulfate releases ammonia from the chloramine molecules. If you don't have something to handle that ammonia, like a large, well established bio filter (which still takes a little time) or additional chemicals that "lock" ammonia (like you see in comercial dechlorinators), then you are introducing ammonia to your tank with every water change.

This may not be a problem for people with low pH water, lots of plants, and/or massive overfiltration, but it's something to think about if your water contains high levels of chloramine and you live in an area with liquid rock tapwater or you keep rift lake ciclids. A water change that doesn't neutralize released ammonia in pH 8.2+ water is likely to cause serious harm to your fish.

Just some thoughts...

Thanks for the help everyone.

OohFeeshy I ordered mine fore Fish Fur n Feather, cos I hadn;t checked here for any new messages, but its was pretty cheap.

Sarah - brill ty that was exactly the table I'd been looking for. Hope whatever was making you sad has eased, and you are now able to sleep better, even if that means we can;t benefit from your insomnia.

Modernhamlet; Sure, it kicks out some ammo, and yes, all my tanks are overfiltered, some incredibly so. Hasn't bothered the fish yet, but knowing how it works, I still use Prime for really young fry.

The topic said water conditioners, cost etc., so I thought I'd toss out the cheapest one. Best is Prime, when a rep from Tetra tells me it's even between Prime & Aquasafe, I'll go with Prime. He sure isn't going to tell me his product comes in second, he's in sales.

Safe from Seachem is a good cross between price & economy, it's the same chemical formula as Prime, in a powdered form.
