the water in my 40 gallon has turned a green colour colour, and looks like there are small green spores floating on the surface.
What could be causing this? and how can i get rid of it?
thanks for any advice

to me it sounds like a algea boom and if that is what it is it is really bad and hard to get rid of.

I am going through similar problem right now with one of my tank. I thought I was doing good to plecos by increasing the lighting time, but I guess I over-did it..

What I'm doing right now, is to turn the light off, and do frequent (daily) small water changes. I am seeing some improvement already right now. Initially, I couldn't even see 2 inches into the tank! The only time when I turn on the light is during feeding time.

well, i just looked at my tank and after a few days of doing nothing and having green spores floating on the surface they have all gone. which is a bit strange.
Does anyone know why this might be happening?

THe conditions in the tank have probably changed and caused the algae bloom to die off. the algae may have consumed the available nutrients or perhaps the lighting was scaled back. :dunno:

I just finished with algae bloom. All I can say is water changes. I did 10% (or so) every day for a couple of days, it then cleared up. No Fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck :alien:

Or it could be aliens! lol

I never had that happen to me. How common is it? I was tolda that algae blooms are due to overfeeding.

It happened to me when we lived in Washington State. It happened right after an earthquake that we had in 2001. I have NO idea if the 2 are related, but it would get green for 2-3 mos, clear up for a month and then get mucky again. It wasn't fun.

What I SHOULD have done was turn off the light and covered the tank so NO light got in. Uncovered it only for feeding and for small daily water changes.

i had the same thing in my tank. if u have a full day of doing nothing, change all of the water. it taked a wile (me and my 10 gal) but its should go away. a nother good thing to do is clean n e signs, rocks, decor that u can.

I _think_ the reason is the combination of abundance of nutrients, CO2 and lights. So if you are continuously adding more fish to reach the full stock level and already have alot of lights, you might hit into this problem.

At least I think that's what happened to my tank... ;) Fishes don't seem to mind much though...
