Welcome to the forum xtc246 :)

With fish in, water changes can be performed, we generally say, as soon as one hour after the last water change. Sometimes people don't clean their sand or gravel at all and in that case it can take so many water changes to clear that they wish they had dismantled the tank and just cleaned it properly before putting it in. But usually its not that bad and a series of water changes will eventually clear it up nicely.

In general, you have given too little info for the members to help you much. Usually we need to know the tank dimensions, when you first filled it, what kind of media is in what type of filter, how that filter was cycled (fishless or fish-in), what chemicals and temp are happening, what plants are in, what fish stocking is anticipated, basically your whole life ;)

oops sorry i ment to say had the tank running 2 months now with fish in have done water change every 2 weeks but was not putting the end of the water changer(not sure what you call them)into the gravel i did today and so much muck came out of the gravel but i only did a water change yesterday but found out i was doing it wrong and not getting into the gravel its a 78 ltr tank with only a few hardy fish in till i get all the levels right like i said my amonia was the only thing high and am starting to think it was because i was not cleaning the gravel when doing water changes??

hi,do you mean you weren't using the gravel vac properly? this is like a siphon and you stick it into the gravel, it sucks out the much as well as the water. i hate using them, i can't get on with it at all i create a big mess of water everywhere and the water goes horrible for hours after. so i have decided to just stop using it. i haven't cleaned the gravel for ages and i haven't had a problem with ammonia so that's probably not why u have ammonia. it might just be the fact that you have too much waste in tank eg food for bacteria to process. how did u cycle your tank? with or without fish?

anyway, you can do water changes 2 days running at 25%, you should probably increase this though if you have high ammonia. do you have a test kit? if so whats ur ammonia level? if its above 0.25 you should try to lower it. same with nitrite
