Are there other reasons for doing a water change, other than the obvious, ie to reduce the ammonia, nitrIte or nitrAte?
The reason I ask, is my tap water is worse than the water in my tank and it seems pointless changing the water, just to make it worse. I have waited a while to see if my tapwater would improve but it still seems to be the same. My local water authority chemist seems to think the readings are within their limits. The readings are.........

TANK.....ammonia zero, nitrIte zero, nitrAte 10ppm
TAP.......ammonia zero, nitrite 0.25ppm, nitrAte 20ppm

If you live anywhere near london area the water is bad, i had the same problem and bought a nitraking filter and the problem was sorted.
These filter your tapwater of nitrates before you put it in your tank, they do need recharging with aquarium salt, how often depends on how much you use it. usually about every 300 gallons.
hope this helped.
