Graig, moving this from the newbie forum to the tropical chit chat forum. Also, here is a long thread done recently on water changes. Water Changes I used the Search option, a good feature for all. If you still have questions after reading this link, feel free to ask,, :D

I do 35-45% combination water changes/gravel vacs once a week. As has already been pointed out, I don't think there is much concern about the biological filter as long as you have a good filter. If you are concerned, you can always vac half of the gravel one week, and the other half the next week. I can see the difference in the activity of my fish following a water change so I prefer weekly changes and gravel vacs but many experienced aquarists do them a little less often.

When I first started, I was overcleaning the gravel...ie: doing about a 50% wc because I thought I needed to vacuum all the gravel every week. Now I only clean half the gravel at each weekly wc and my tank clears faster and tests always with no ammo or nitites.

Look at the date on this thread folks, it is over a year old  I think the question has been answered already and the link is dead cos the post isnt there anymore  .
