Water Change With Straight Tapwater

I got one of those devices that attaches to the tap and allows you to extract water out of the tank into the sink. Then you can refill the tank right from the tap. I have always treated my water for chlorine and stuff in a container, left it for 24 hours and then put it in the tank. Can I do a 25% water change and add water right from the tap and then treat it? The LFS says that's what they do.

Most dechlorinators work instantly, so there shouldn't be a need to leave it for 24 hours.

Yes, you can; lots of people do it that way. You need to add the dechlorinator before you start refilling and you need to use enough dechlor for the whole tank, not just the new water, as some of it gets locked up by the organic compunds present in the tank.

Thanks for the response. I'm going to try it. My mail reason for leaving the water for 24 hours was to get it up to room temperature. I guess I just try to hit the right temp with the water from the tap.

I've always just treated the amount of water I'm adding, not the whole tank. I've never heard of dechlor being effected by random organic molecules... Even if it is though you still have dilution working for you. Any small amount of chlorine or chloramines left won't stay around for very long.

treating the tank, before the water is added. is recommended by some conditioners. and fine to do.

Sorry raptorrex, but minnnt 'wit/sarcasm' made me laugh.........and i've been 'under the weather,feeling poorly' (still weak)...so it cheered me up.....no offense

And the winner of the 'insult' trade goes to minnt (maybe next time tizer)........simply cos i dislike fish-in cycle....having recently been forced into one.
