My tank's about a week old and I'm planning to do my first water change because of high nitrate levels. But when I tested the water I was gonna replace it with, the nitrate levels are just as high. What do I do?

All my saltwater (in the tank and the replacement water) was purchased at the LFS and I think came directly from the sea.

I've read a lot in this forum on where to get your water from...but most all sources are for freshwater. Where does everybody get their salt water from?

You have several choices for saltwater:
1) mix your own with RO water
2) mix your own with distilled
3) buy SW from your lfs
4) buy SW prepackaged (NSW, natural sea water)
5) bring it home for the ocean if you live near pristine water conditions (not my recommendation).

I would tell you LFS about the state of there water and maybe they will test it infront of you. It could be a bad store or a faulty test kit.

I'd make sure you can find away of replacing your water with water that is of better condition even if it means making your own.

Fish stores in my area are kinda primitive...they don't even use nitrate tests so I had to bring my own. And I found out that the water they sold me before was already used...from their own fish tanks. Grrr! I was able to find fresh, unused natural seawater from the store next door.

Why dont you mix your own salt?
I would never trust any shop to give me "pure sea water" I collect my own where i know its safe to collect. Even then i still test the water before bringing it home with me.
The far safer option (especially for beginners) is to mix your own water up.
