Water Change Frequency

your stats arent the point. your filters DO NOT remove all the detrius. PERIOD.
like i said. spend a week swimming in your own waste. see how you like it. and if you like, add one of those blue toilet tablets to make sure the "water statss are fine"

again. if someone cant make it a point to do a weekly WC, then why keep fish?
thats like having a dog and saying" well, it doesnt NEED food right now, ill feed him in a few days"
water parameters aside, you are responsible for the quality of life for these fish, as you have decided to take them from their homes and put them in a little glass box for no other reason then your enjoyment and entertainment. the least you can do is scoop out their poop once a week. i know it might take 5 whole munutes out of your precious existence, but its the absolute least you can do for them.

bitterespects and stang .... give over and is that a leafish in your pictuer bitter?

no, its a new guinea datnoid (Datnioides campbelli). one of the rare varients of datnoids. i have 3 of them in a tank with my other datnoids. they cost a pretty penny, but are well worth it imo.
and let me tell you, when you start paying well over $200/ea for fish, you will be more inclined to make sure theyre well taken care of.

you say that but i wouldnt mind sitting in a glassbox getting fed, being cared for, n having naked female swiming around me

Get over yourself!
Do you know how often I change my filters?
Do you know my full maintenance regime?
Do you know what my tank set ups are like?
I am responsible for my fish which is why I keep them in good size tanks with good filtration. If the tanks were that bad, the fish would be showing signs of disease and the water quality would be poor.
I've also kept fish long enough to understand how filtration works, so no need to patronise.
It might be worth reading other peoples posts and having a flame as I can assure you, I'm not the only one who has kept fish this way with no problems.

getting overfed, swimming in your own poop, in a glass box 1/1000000000000 the size of your actual home.

yup. ive been doing this for a long time, and i still learn things every day. just gotta make sure you get your information for a good source.

i had to repost just thought it was funny

id still be loving it mate whatever the poo content was ....call me wierd but i like to think of myself as lazy

hmmmm many opinions vary the anoyes me so i will go to bed its quarter too twelve

My goldfish tank gets 40% every 5 days (pooper troopers indeed!!)

My community tank gets 25-30% weekly

All betta tanks have a 50% WC each week, as they are smaller and I don't want any trouble.

All tanks get tested before water change, and also at any time where my paranoid mind thinks it picks up a trace of disease on a fish, lol.

Everyone has their own system with water changes - and that system works for them. If it isn't working then i'm sure they'd have changed it by now. I really don't understand why people get so wound up in their own underpants when someone else's regime differs to their own, and it's offensive to say people are bad fishkeepers when you are basing that opinion on a few lines of a post.

oh my god

thank you silver rabbit
i sometimes gett grief from nobs who complaint about me using word like nobs saying things like stop saying words like nobs you obv dont care for fish

Anything less then 25-30% weekly is poor husbandry. If someone can't make time AT LEAST once a week to make sure their fish arent swimming in their own waste, then they have no business keeping fish imo.

A sweeping statement like that just shows a little ignorance my friend

For instance, Tanganyikan Cichlids originate from a VERY stable environment in respect of temperature and PH levels. Therefore a change of water above 20% will alter the levels to their detriment.

I am sure other fishkeepers have equally as good reasons for the level and frequency of their water changes and would regard your comment as rather silly

i wasnt speaking about anyone directly. read back. infact, i didnt read any previous posts before posting mine.
plain and simple. if you cant maintain a weekly upkeep of your pets, why have them?

if you look back in this thread, youll notice everyone says about the same thing, less one or two people.
if you do a search online, you will find that just about everyone says the same thing.
if you ask experts, they will also tell you the same thing.
hell, if you go to your lfs. even the people who dont seem to know much about fish will tell you the same thing.

normal practice is 25-30% weekly. and anything less in my professional experience, is not only "not enough", but poor husbandry.
while you might not care about your fish that cost you $1.00 or less, maybe you should spend some real money on fish and see if you dont spend a little more time worrying about upkeep.

BAHAHHAHAHAHA. ignorance? are you joking.
thinking a 20% WC will alter the levels in your tank, is just plain ignorant.
how long have you been keeping fish?
maybe you should do a little research before saying things like that. i have kept all kind of old word cichlids. and know people who have been doing so for well over 20 years. and guess what??? 25% weekly.

google is your friend

Another sweeping statement.
I have spent anywhere from £1-£180 on my fish and they all receive the same care. The ones that cost little money are no less important than the expensive ones.
People have their own way of maintaining their tanks and just because it doesn't fit in with yours, they must be bad fish keepers?!
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, it doesn't always mean they are right.
