About a month ago I purchased 10 platies for my 29 gallon, 7 of the drab grey type platies and 3 darker different colored version. The Grey colored male contiously picks at the darker colored female platys. This went on for about 3 1/2 weeks ( No injuries just the male would nudge them out of the way ). I moved the 3 females into their own tank ( 10 gallon ) with 2 cories and a ghost shrimp.

So just to point out to buyers, dont buy mixed colors because the different colors will fight...

Anyone have some kind of thing like this happen before?

fighting.... i always thought males just do that to any female they want to mate with -_-

I have 1 Female platy, and 1 male, and my female is always chasing my male round the tank, and sometimes buts him out of the way, she never hurts him, but i think shes the boss Lol

Female is orange with black fins
Male is white with Orange and Black patches, (micky mouse)

Platys of different colors should get along fine, your case is definatly a case of the just the individual personality of your male as livebearer personalitys can vary alot- i have 7 female platys at the moment and only 2 of which are the same color and they get along fine with the resident male platy in the tank :) .

Most Platies of all colors will get along fine. In some cases it's just the individual fish. But I have heard of a lot of problems with Blue Platies, and then yellow, orange, or red Platies. There seems to be something about that mix sometimes... But yeah, I have heard of color problems. Most times it's the fish's personality though.

But anyway, thanks for the warning, DSF. :D

My pink male got on fine with his orange female, but bullied his black female so much she couldn't eat, I had to move him in the end. I wonder if it was something about the colour. He never mated with her either.

sounds like typical livebearer mateing behavior. purhaps the darker females are not pregnant and the lighter ones are. this would cause the male to single out the non-pregnant females rather than teh ones who are alredy carrying. platys do not normal distinguish color, im not even sure they can, like most fish they liekly see shape rather than detail. my mum has a community of differant plattys and they get along fairly well. like tokis mentioned not all plattys are teh same, they have differant personalitys that can vary alot. if ur females arnt being harmed i say it would be ok to put them back in. what do u have in there in the way of hideing places? some fake plants will give them a good place to hide.

Sorry to be a bit thick in the head here but are blue platies actuly blue? :*) I have never seen any befor do's anyone have a pic they could show! I would love some of them but never seen them round here. All we seem to get around here is orange orange orange. :S Not that there is anything wrong with orange but thats all my tank seems to consist of in the platie department. :/
Fishy regards, Steve. :D

Yep, some are actually blue. I haven't seen any that are all blue though. The most common blue, around here at least, is the blue Mickey Mouse Platy. Here's a picture:

Hows this for blue?

EDIT: the swordy is at the top the male blue platy is underneath her. Here he looks like he has green on him but normally he is just blue :D

Hi,
I have platies, one orange color male and one white with black spot female, I placed them with my two goldfishes and they all get along fine. Sometimes, the platy will rub against the goldfish and in turn the goldfish does the same to them, but no injuries so far.
The two platy are always at it though..I mean they do this dance in the water where they start from the top and then go circling down...is that a mating ritual or what? :)

I thought of that, Dude, but I never saw any sign at all that he was trying to mate with her, all he did was chasing her away from any food, things got very nasty at mealtimes.

I've had a similiar experience involving platies.I understood these to be peaceful fish but not my lot. They are all varigatus platies and have attacked and bullied other platies such as mickey mouse type we have put into their tank.Females get the same treatment as males and end up hiding and not feeding.Once a platy is picked on it is continually chased by the gang.No other fish are picked on at all not even guppies.
