90% or maybe even more of your bacteria are in your filter media.....thats why you should not replace it until absolutely nessessary.....i have some filter foam that is 4-5 years old

Thanks for all of the help, folks. We seem to be doing okay, keeping the fans on and the hoods off. I've been putting the lights on the evening for a few hours, and that seems to go okay, too.
